Corbeau Baja XRS suspensions seats in a YJ review

Though I would give my impressions of these seats now that I've had them a couple of weeks with both factory YJ brackets and today the Corbeau driver side bracket. I had a lot of questions about fitment before I bought these and could not find any good pictures of the issues people have when installed in a YJ. First off I knew I wanted suspension seats. I had Mastercrafts in my Samurai and loved them. They made a huge difference in how the Sammy rode and were great except for the getting in and out. The frame at the top of the side bolster had no padding and was really rough on the tailbone. About 3 years ago I bought a used Corbeau Baja XRS off of Ebay to replace my gaming chair and I really like it. It's almost as comfortable as the Mastercrafts but actually has padding at the side bolster over the frame.(Please excuse the dog hair I'm a slob)

I was surprised and disappointed when I got the new seats. The side bolsters are seem much taller and as a result the seat seems narrower and less comfortable. Corbeau no longer makes these seats with the smooth vinyl in the middle. It's now a woven looking vinyl that's more grippy but less comfortable. I think the seats need some break in time as they do feel better than they did when I first got them. They are still good seats but they don't fit well in the YJ.

With the factory brackets the seats are too tall. I have to tilt the steering wheel all the way up and its difficult to get in the jeep but I do have decent room between the wheel and my legs. The factory seat bracket is taller in the front than the back tilting the seat base up. The driver side seat is barely able to recline past the roll bar and will tilt back forward with no issue. The passenger seat will recline past the roll bar with pressure on it but I had to remove 2 of the seat mounting bolts to get it back in front of the bar. Also I had to put washers under the front of the factory sliders as they wont clear the vinyl and will cause the tracks to bow and prevent them from moving.

Here are some pics showing how much clearance you will have If you want to run these seats on the factory brackets.

Driver seat reclined past the bar. It is easy to get it to tilt forward past the bar.

Passenger seat wont clear the bar without forcing it.

I decided to order Corbeau's replacement driver seat bracket as its supposed to sit lower and flatter than the factory bracket. These brackets use the CJ bolt holes on the bottom of the seat instead of the YJ pattern.(there are 4 different bolt patterns on the bottom of the XRS seats) I saw plenty of comments about the right front mounting hole needing a spacer to mount correctly. I have a stack of washers in there right now. I did not see any comments about how much further to the outside it mounts the seat. It will now not clear the roll bar at all and I am too far forward even with my stubby legs.(5'11" with a 28" inseam) I do like the height of the bracket. It's now much easier to get into the jeep for both me and my dog. I have more headroom and can use the tilt wheel again but cant stand the legroom. I think I'm gonna make an adaptor with some flat bar to move the driver seat seat back inboard. I'm not willing to give up the tumble forward mechanism on the passenger seat so I guess its gonna just be taller. I may mod the factory bracket eventually but my dog is the only passenger for the most part so its not a big deal.

Tilt mechanism now rests firmly against the roll bar preventing the seat from extending fully to the rear.

Sad that Corbeau wont fix this. There are tons of complaints all over the internet.

Overall I'm ok with the seats. If they break in to the point where my gaming chair is I'll be happy with how they sit but as of right now I'm a bit disappointed. If your considering these seats for a YJ and you don't want to mod brackets I would look elsewhere.

I'm 6', 210 lbs and I've had a totally different experience with my Corbeau XRS suspension seats. I think the side bolsters are pretty minimal compared to some of the others out there, and I definitely dont need the wheel tilted up for space, Mines pretty much straight (same angle as steering column). Probably the most comfortable seat that I've ever had when it comes to auto seats, and I currently have five herniated disc's in my lower back.

That being said, I do agree that the roll bar is in the way of reclining the seat all the way back, but I dont need to lay down and sleep in the Jeep either. It definitely reclines back further than I need it to be for my driving position. Seats are a kind of personal feel thing, just like motorcycle seats, everyone's asses are different, and everyones driving position is different. What some consider very comfortable, others can barley tolerate.

@SpookyXJ Thanks for the detailed writeup.
When I got my old heap, I removed the back seat and the sport bar padding around the hoop. The only padding I left was the padding on the windshield to hoop struts. No rear seat passengers to worry about so the hoop padding didn't seem necessary. I always wear my seatbelt so I figured I wouldn't bang my noggin on the hoop if I rolled the Jeep.
How would your seats work for you if you removed the padding on your sport bar hoop?

Good Luck, L.M.

@zebraranger I'm fat and old (245lbs) its harder for me to get in a jeep than it used to be. I agree the side bolsters are not that big compared to a lot of seats but ones on my new seats are taller than the ones on the used Baja XRS I have. I wish they felt like my old seat I really like it. I was wrong about what the tilt mechanism was hitting. It was the wire cover for the hard top wiring. I just took it off and the seat will extend back fully now but the seatback is fully upright because of the roll bar. The factory brackets are a better fit than the Corbeau bracket for the most part.

@Luckymac no its still on there its really ratty lookin' so I have replacement bestop padding ordered should be here Sunday. I like the look of it more than any real need for it.

Now that I've studied it a little more I do have an easy solution to get the driver seat to recline like I want. The top of the corbeau seat frame is just flatbar and its perfectly level. I have room to inboard the seat about 2 inches by just drilling 4 new holes and moving the seat tracks over.

I think I'm gonna build a new center console to fit a subwoofer and narrow it down for the seats to clear. I may hack up the bestop one that's in there and fiberglass the cupholders to the front of the sub enclosure.

Ok both seats now recline and all I had to do was drill 8 holes. For the driver side bracket I moved the seat inboard about 2". The seat is no longer centered but it reclines past the roll bar easily. I much prefer the lower and leveled seating position this bracket provides over the factory bracket. I no longer have room for the bestop console so I'm building a new one with a sub enclosure. I also mounted my sub amp to the seat base along with an auxiliary fuse block for USB chargers and Aux outlets that will be in the center console along with the overhead lighting that's in the sound bar.
Image

Easy access at the front of the seat bracket for the sub amp controls on the bottom of the amplifier.
Image

For the passenger side bracket I just drilled new mounting holes about a half inch over. Its a tight squeeze but it will recline and pull back up past the roll bar while seated in it no problem.
Image

I also got started on the center console but did not get very far. Sub will downfire and enclosure will be a mix of MDF and fiberglass.
