Cost too high for dealer oil change?

So my first JKU, a 2015, was totaled in a crash. The dealer I bought it from offered free lifetime oil changes so I never really paid attention to what they cost. I recently purchased a 2018 JKU and now have to pay for oil changes. I plan to have the dealer change the oil every 5k miles. I called and was old that either a full synthetic or synthetic blend oil change was $65 and tire rotation $35. Therefore I’ll be spending over $100 every 5,000 miles. I live in Connecticut. Does this price high?

My wife works at the local Jeep dealership and she said their oil changes are $65 for synthetic, $45 for conventional, and $20 for tire rotations. I work on the Army base and the auto craft shop wants $59 for a synthetic oil change. Of course, I spend over $100 to change my own oil in my diesel F250. Also, others will probably disagree with me, but I only rotate my tires every other oil change.

You're supposed to get 4 free oil changes with the Jeep Wave program.

But even then, I'm not using mine. I decided to do my own oil changes because I just didn't like the poor word of mouth every dealer service center around me has received.

I last spent $31 on 5+1L Pennzoil Ultra Platinum and another $9 on a Mopar oil filter. So I guess it cost me $40 and an hour of my time to do the oil change and tire rotation.

I realize that some people may not be able to change their own oil for certain reasons, but the JK is probably the easiest oil change on any vehicle I've ever had.

I got a boat load of Pennzoil Ultra Platinum on clearance at Auto Zone for $2 a quart, and Walmart's Super Tech filters on clearance for $1.50 each. That comes to $13.50 per oil change, and I have several oil changes worth on hand.

That's high but not the highest I've seen here. Some CT prices are nuts - I've seen $100+ just for the dealer oil change for some cars.

Given that it's a 2018, I assume it's from an actual Jeep dealer, those numbers surprise me. I do my own, so maybe they're normal from Chrysler/Jeep.

Check Papa's? I bought mine there but haven't used it for service.. but people love them. They also send me coupons constantly.

They offered me 10 oil changes for $450, but I prefer not to have to pay $450 up front for oil changes. However, that Mopar coupon for $79.99 which is for two oil changes AND two tire rotations is a great deal. I know it’s only for five quarts of oil so I would have to pay additional for another quart, but I doubt that my dealer will accept that coupon based on the fact that the only deals they had started at 10 oil changes.

You get what you pay for. I hope pimply-faced 19 year old didn't strip out your drain plug or overtighten your oil filter cap or forget the o-ring. Or over-torque your lug nuts. Did you mark your tires to ensure the tires were rotated in the correct sequence? $19.95 wouldn't even pay for the full synthetic oil I use in my vehicles.

With all my vehicles, I get the dealer to do oil changes while they are under warranty. When the warranty expires, I do my own.

It costs a bit more, but I can afford it and there are some benefits.

- Proof that the oil changes were done is recorded on the FCA computer system.
- They check for outstanding service bulletins each time you're there. (Speedy Lube places can't do this).
- I get to browse around the showroom and the lot while I'm waiting and kick the tires on the new models.

How much will it cost you to change the oil and rotate the tires? Do you have a floor jack? Torque wrench? What's your time worth? Don't forget you have to recycle that oil. How far? Do it all yourself next time it's due and see if it might be worth that $100. Sometimes it's worth it to let the dealer do it.

$65 for a synthetic oil change isn't high. My wife's Tacoma costs $89.

I don't change my oil because I'm pinching pennies, I do it myself so that I know it was done right. You don't have to go any further than this forum to find horror stories about a simple oil change being totally screwed up. I have several family members with their own bad experiences. It happens all the time. I have a Fumoto oil drain valve, which makes draining the oil a fast and clean operation. Because we don't have any storm drains, I can dump the oil at the Autozone I pass every day or I can take it to the dump when I make a dump run. But every time I do my own oil change I know it was done right and I know I got the synthetic oil I paid for.

$79 for 2 full syn changes with tire rotations is a great deal. Unfortunately, my local dealer is so swamped with service appointments that appointments are made 10 or more days out and even then, you're sitting in the waiting area for 2.5 hours to get the job done.

Seems that they book like the airlines do......... :-(

I hope your dealer service department is swamped because they have a good reputation and not because Jeeps are breaking down ; )

That cost seems about right for most shops using synthetic, about $9.99 per qt. I got a screaming deal from Costco where they had cases of 6qt bottles(!) for $25. perfect and CHEAP. I did have to buy a filter, catch pan, shop towels and stuff but that's just stupid cheap. And changing oil in a newer wrangler is SO MUCH easier than when I was younger.

You should be covered under Jeep Wave for 2 years that includes 4 oil changes and 4 tire rotations with a new JK.

However, my dealer is about the same for full synthetic.

I do my own oil changes on my personal vehicles, not because I can't afford to pay the dealer but because I prefer to do it myself. I know that I will put more care and effort into it than the low man at a dealership will, and if it isn't done right I know who to blame.
But if you have no interest in changing your own oil,and there is no shame in that, that $69 price for a synthetic oil change is fair IMHO. I certainly would not call that "wasting" your money.
My work vehicle is a fleet vehicle, and as such I have to take it to a shop. They will not let me do it myself. So for that vehicle I take it to a shop. Sometimes I feel like they do a good job, but other times it is like watching the Keystone cops change the oil. I would never subject my personal vehicle to that. But it is a free country and everyone needs to be responsible for their own choices. What is the right choice for me may not be the right choice for someone else.

$65 for dealer full synth is pretty normal, but after 1 of 2 dealers broke the belly guard on the my Lancer (then neither would properly fix the issue) I have always done my own changes, regardless of promotions/coupons. I usually spend about $40 per change for full synth plus 45 minutes of my time but usually budget that into the same time for working on other mods, so the labor isn't really a factor.

Tire rotation twice a year, self-done. If you need a torque wrench you may be able to rent one, check your local auto parts store to see if they offer such a service.

JKU no lift Fumoto drain valve, 15/16 6 point socket, drain pan and a 5 gallon can to store drain oil for recycle. [can holds 4 oil changes].
Reach under jeep [No jack needed] open drain valve, open hood, change filter, close drain valve, Fill with oil of your choice, pour drain oil in to can for storage, Take oil to recycle every 4th oil change. Close hood drive to Discount tire for tire rotation. [Free even if you did not buy tires from them], while there I ask them to let me inspect brake pads while wheels are off. I realize this doesn't work for everyone but is food for thought.

I take my Jeep to the dealer for the Synthetic oil change because they offer a package if you buy 3.....$120, I think. And a tire rotation is $20 and I have watched them use torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts correctly. If they want to rotate my 35's for $20, I will let them.

Not sure how much difference (if any) there is but my wife has a 12 Journey with the 3.6. Every oil change is done a the dealer and it is always high $20's plus tax, comes out to $31.00 after tax. Never had a problem with them doing them and I figured I would have around $20.00 (or more) to do it myself, then I have to deal with disposing of oil etc. I plan to use the 4 free oil changes that come with the new jeep and from there I'll decide if I want to do them myself or not.

I think dealers handle this differently here:

1. Dealer changes oil very cheap, it is viewed as a “loss leader” to bring in traffic, in hopes of selling other services
2. Dealer charges actual rate, and their mark up to be profitable

Find whichever fits you.
While I prefer to do my own (though that’s not what the OP asked) ,,,, generally I do biz with option #2, as I don’t like to play the game. Every situation is different, only you can decide.
