I just saw this mod for TJ and YJ gas tank mod. Getting back 4 gallons more gas in your 15 gallon tank. You will have a tank that can fill up 19 gallons by cutting out breather tube in side the gas tank so you can access 4 more gallons of gas.
Also since my Jeep is 19 year old this will give me access to fuel pump strainer filter. Which I will change to new one and price it for $15 at Autozone.
This mod will be a win win.
Has anyone done this mod? Did you find any strange problems that might come up because of the mod? Please chime in and your opinion if this is good thing?

Thanks-

I dropped mine 2 years ago to do it and found it was already done, do yourself a favor and get access to a motorcycle Jack- makes lifting the tank WAY easier, at least have a second body to help you balance while jacking the tank back up. It’s a pain in the ass by yourself if you never done it. I somehow managed to put my HD fuel tank skid on myself and wouldn’t want to do it again alone.

Make sure you disconnect the fuel/vapour lines and electric connector before dropping the tank. There's a ground strap to the filler that should be grounded by a clip to the chassis.

There are two strainers within the tank. One at the base of the assembly, and one at the base of the pump within the assembly.

I think dailydriventj.com has a write up showing the fuel tank drop and pump assembly.

After pulling my gas tank out and find out only 2000-Newer all had 19 gallon tanks.
I took this time and did update on maintenance.
Painted the gas tank skid plate.
Cleaned out gas tank of any debris.
Added new rubber hoses.
Replaced the old gas pump strainer.
Added a differential housing on the vent tube.
Biggest difference is my Jeep cranks and starts after the 1st crank. Before the jeep would take 5-10 cranks to start. Much of issue must have the dirty 170k 19 year old strainer.

I was posting from my phone when I mentioned the dailydriventj website. If you'd had a look at the site you may have found this page - http://dailydriventj.com/fuel_pump.shtml

You can see from the pics on that page that there are two strainers at the base of the fuel pump as I'd mentioned earlier. If you've not refitted the tank you may want to replace the second one too.

So I finally took her for a long drive and I noticed that the Jeep has more power. Can a clean strainer help with reclaim horsepower? I bought her used and I really don't have a baseline on how a Jeep should drive. Let alone modded Jeep. Second thing I noticed also she starts right up on the 1st crank.
Is this a false impression or is the Jeep really driving better?
