I'm trying to get the full steering back on my 2004 TJ after a Rocky Road Outfitters OTT steering conversion. The pitman arm is too short to give full steering motion. I bought a WJ pitman arm but the one I received from Rough Country has the 4 larger flat tooths locations are mirror image from the TJ pitman arm.

My question is do you think this a mistake on the rough country part or are the WJ pitman arms not compatible with the TJ. ie: the gear locators are mirror image.

I went the direction of the WJ arm since it was slightly longer and from other forums it sounded like it would fit.

Any info would be helpful, thanks.

Thanks, I went to the OTT kit to solve the bump steer issue with the 6.5" Rubicon Express Long arm kit. This kit totally solved all the bump steer and drives amazing now. You would not believe the difference in drivability with this kit. No matter what myself or the local off-road shop did could totally eliminate the bump steer. This kit did. The only issue is it reduced the turning radius a bit and I want to figure out how to get it back 100%. Hence my question on the pitman arms. Seems the data on lengths of different arms is really hard to get. I know the TJ is 5.5" but I think I need 6" or so.

Pics in post 7 here

And post 3 here to see why it looks like mirror image (it is flipped)

Yea from all the pics it looks like the WJ is mirrored when installed like the TJ with the drop down. This would explain why the part I got is the way it is not just a mistake in manufacturing. Looks like I will need to do more research to get a longer arm that fits the TJ properly. Interesting that the WJ splines are rotated, wonder why.

Thanks for your help, I will keep looking for a solution.

I assume YJ and TJ pitman arms are clocked the same (not sure). I am running a WJ pitman arm on my YJ because i have a D44 with Reid Racing flat top knuckles. I can tell you that the WJ pitman arm is long enough to work with D44 length knuckles. But the master splines are clocked different so I had to file them out to clock the pitman arm to where i needed it.

The splines are time consuming but not hard to file out. I used a hack saw blade by hand and carefully sawed down the center of the master spline. Then once your deep enough use a small triangle file and clean it up to form your 2 new splines.

That is a great Idea and I had not considered going to that length. I will by a stock one and give it a try. The rough county had too large of a drop for my setup so I will return it anyway and buy a stock one and hack it as you did. Thanks for the great idea.

WJ pitman is clocked differently than the TJ one. Can be filed out to match the TJ shaft
Basicaly YJ/XJ/YJ/TJ are all clocked the same, just have different drops
YJ or TJ are almost the same - YJ asi maybe an 1/2" more drop than TJ
XJ pitman can be used as 3" drop for YJ/TJ and zj pitman can be used as 4" drop
Rod ends tapper is the same for all

Not really clocked different WJ was designed to have raise not drop
When you attempt to install it inverted it appears to be clocked different
The shaft you are installing it on is also tapered which may or may not matter when attempting to install WJ pitman arm upside down so it drops like TJ arm does

I have the same steering setup on my 2005 LJ, I love it but would like to get full steering lock back also. If you find something that works, PM me.
