Reached a deal on a 14 JK Sport with what appears to be the base x2 stereo. Nothing but radio, CS, and aux (with an aux jack that probably is toast). Two buttons on steering wheel that are for what? I want to upgrade the unit but I don't need much. If I can get Apple CarPlay only that would be awesome. Does the fact that my oem unit is so basic limit me? if I can't upgrade to CarPlay could I just pick up an upgraded Chrysler unit that has bluetooth and Sirius and just swap it in easily and cheaply? I'd think they are available cheap. Thanks.

That is the RES (letters on lower right of face plate) it is the non satellite version of the RES
Next step up is RES with sirius
Next up is Six disc/dvd either with or without sirius
Next up is non max mygig (REN or after 2010 RBZ) either with or without Sirius
Finally the three NAV my gig radios RER RHR and RHB all always had Sirius

the wiring is same no matter which of the radios you have except sat antenna coax and gps coax plus the video wires for remote screens and backup camera

Thanks. Any idea re Bluetooth, phone? I thought I read the Bluetooth on these was pretty crappy?

What are the "step" and "reset" button on steering wheel? Can that pod be upgraded to one with volume, etc?

The step button will change what is displayed on the instrument panel. Distance to empty, average miles per gallon, direction (compass),
etc. The reset will set the displayed value back to zero, for those that can be reset.

I went to Best Buy and purchased a replacement unit which included Blue Tooth Car Play. Not being overly “into” car audio I got the least expensive unit I could find but it works great.

Two things, I did lose the volume control on the steering wheel. Talking with several people, it seems to be a common problem with Jeeps. Secondly if you want Sirius you will want another unit.

do you have the manual for the Jeep? If not they can be down loaded.

Thanks for the info. My JK doesn't have any buttons on the steering wheel for the radio and my radio has no Bluetooth or anything extra.

FYI, the buttons on the steering wheel for radio control are actually on the back side. They rock either up or down for changing station and volume.

Most will tell you it's not work putting another Jeep radio in, just find an aftermarket one you like and put it in. You will need a translator like PAC or Maestro to convert the Jeeps signals into standard radio signals for power and such.

Thanks all. I don’t have the vehicle in my possession yet, probably will close deal next week. My new Ram has radio buttons on back of the steering wheel, didn’t think an older Wrangler would but it makes sense. I've done several installs over various cars and have no reservations about doing this one. Just need to figger out what unit and pieces for what I want/need.

I saw this post last week and after doing some research decided to pull the trigger on the AX6000 from Trail Seven. They had it to my door in less than 48 hours! Followed the install video and it was a breeze. I couldn’t be happier and just wanted to give a shout out to Trail Seven on a high quality product and super fast shipping.

@Trail Seven, does the Sony XAV-AX6000 have stand alone navigation? or does it require you to use Android Auto or Apple Car Play to use navigation? I'd like to have something that doesn't rely on a phone connection to work.

That’s a great question!
All of the Sony head unit bundles that we offer rely on Apple or Android connection in order to use any map functions. There may be a function to connect an external device through the mini HDMI port to utilize the screen for the map but nothing that we’re aware of.

Sorry to revive a thread from the graveyard but I'm curious about the major differences between the 4000 & 6000. I've looked online and seems biggest difference is 6000 had HDMI input which I have no interest in. Only difference that caught my attention was that I think 4000 had 2v and 6000 5v pre amp outputs or something like that. I honestly have no idea what any of that means but the article I read said that the 6000 was preferred if you planned to use aftermarket amps. I have no plans to do anything crazy but wouldn't mind swapping out speakers in the sound bar and plan to swap out the stock sub. If I need to add an amp to the mix I will. Based on this would you recommend the 4000 or 6000?

I can break that down for you @Gregg00SS.

Sony 4000- 1 year warranty, beveled resistive screen, 2v pre amp outputs.
Sony 6000- 3 year warranty, non beveled capacitive screen, 5v pre amp outputs, HDMI port for live streaming

The Sony 6000's capacitive screen means that it's more sensitive/ responsive to the touch vs the resistive screen. The pre amp outputs difference is most beneficial for hooking an external amp for a subwoofer. Although the 6000 has a slightly better screen, the 4000 is still a great head unit. For some, the extra warranty coverage makes the most difference.
