Back in the spring I had a strange no-start sequence. Instead on starting normally where the engine started and the RPMs kicked up to about 2000-2500 and then dropped back to an idle, I had what I called a half-start. The engine would sort of start, chugging at about 400 RPM and no response to the accelerator. Then it started just fine on the second try and didn't do it again for a few days. Then it started doing it more often. Then on night about 30 miles from home it did it 3 straight times. I thought it was going to strand me.
Now the Chief is basically a re-trimmed Sahara so it has the auto headlights which means as soon as the ignition is turned on, the headlights come on. Even though the headlights are LEDs and don't take much current, I turned them completely off and it started. First thing Monday morning I went for a new battery. The factory battery was over 3 1/2 years old and I know the battery when it gets weak throws strange symptoms.
After replacing the battery it started normally each time for about a month, then did it again. This time I looked on the forum and found that it could be the accelerator pedal which is actually a lever connected to a rheostat and is connected to the electrical harness. I talked to a trusted mechanic what was involved and he told me to just buy a new one and they bolt on with two screws. I ordered it and since it has arrived the Jeep has never failed to start properly since. I am still looking at the new part in the parts box.
I am not saying either items, battery or accelerator is the cause of the issue, but our new vehicles are complicated electronics and it could be. If your dash lights come on when you first turn the key on, it's not likely to be the ignition switch. If the security light goes out after 3 seconds, it's not the key fob. It just could be the battery, and it just could be the accelerator.
