Looking for a Unicorn of a roof rack

I’ve read quite a few of the previous threads looking for recommendations on roof racks and found some I could settle with but don’t want to settle just yet. I’ve got a 2015 wrangler unlimited with a hardtop and freedom panels. I’m looking for a roof rack system that is either 2 separate parts or possibly extendable/retractable. I want a rack that is full length of the roof when freedom panels are intact while also allowing removal of the freedom panels and still have the rest of the roof covered by the rack and fully functional. I’m not planning to carry a lot of weight on top often. Most of the racks I see are either partial length covering the back portion of the roof only or full length covering the whole roof but not able to remove the freedom panels easily. Any help or thoughts are appreciated! Thanks

I’ve got a Congo rack that is full length and very similar to the above. It’s been great for 2 primary reasons: 1) it was pretty cheap when I got it (those days are gone I believe), and 2) it comes off completely in under 20 minutes by myself. I run a soft top in the summer, so this was a hard requirement, and the noise with the soft top and a rack is unbearable.

That aside, I can get the freedom panels off with the rack on without having to tilt it up, and I think a good number of racks offer this, However, in the 10 years I’ve had my JKUR, I’ve done the freedom panels off with the rest of the top once. The wind buffeting is unbearable, so it’s basically an all or nothing deal for me.

But I’m pretty certain the Gobi rack offers the ability to pull the panels with the rack intact, and I know an option is to have a “panel” for the rack on the front part. Gobi is really the benchmark for racks in my opinion, but lead times and cost are a bit absurd in my opinion.

Personally, I like my solution best as I don’t want the rack to live on the Jeep and it is easily installed or pulled off and only the brackets remain.

The Gobi rack covers the roof basically from the Freedom panels back to the rear of the Jeep. So the Freedom panels are easily removed. Gobi also sells an add-on which covers that open space where the Freedom panels are so you can have a full length rack. I got that extra panel free when I bought my rack from them.

I really like my ARS Low Pro MODRAK roof rack. I used the roof rack with no top, hard top, and with the Bestop NX Trektop (without the back windows). It was worth waiting and looking at all my options aince I waited for it for so long. I was contemplating but had to make sure that it fits all my requirements: (1) weight that can support upto 350lbs dynamic (800lbs static) and (2) useable with hard top, soft top, and no top (like a safari). I know this top has been available to consumers for at least 6+ years but after recently ordering and putting it on my 2016 JKU, I still get a lot of compliments even some people asking who makes the roof rack. Anyways, I will be installing the front hoop and rails to accommodate an awning that I want to use. Yes, I actually measured twice/three times before drilling once; and I got all four holes precisely on the first drill. I really like the way it looks.

Anyways, enjoy!!!

Here is the link: https://gr8tops.com/shop/jeepmodels...p/jeepmodels/wrangler-lj-2/adventure-rack-systems-low-profile-roof-rack-for-jku

There are only four (4) screws that attaches the rack to the internal support brackets (two (2) in the front and two (2) at the back. The two front brackets are wedge between the hard top and metal support beams which use the same holes for the soft top screws. The two (2) rear screws is bolted directly to rear 2" metal hoops (came with the ModRak Low Profile roof rack) which is bolted directly (as seen on the pictures) to the rear support bars (C pillar); thats the reason why the rack supports the heaviest load.

You can the entire setup at $1200 (roof rack, side truss/rails (for awnings) and front hoop (for light bars) with grab on handles. Or just buy the parts you need (roof rack for $520) for now get the rest when you need it. I will send more pics of the rack is attached/bolted internally within the Jeep. I bought the side 2" side rails/handle bars for $29 and $58 respectively (as seen on the pictures).

*Oh yeah, watch for this product in Facebook Market as it appears once in a while at a cheaper price; which is how I found this product in the first place.
