As I search the internet for rideable trails in my home state, I'm having difficulty determining if I can take my JK on some of the trails I'm seeing. If it's described as an "OHV" trail, am I allowed on it by Wisconsin law?

Welcome Aboard! Unfortunately Wisconsin is not very Jeep friendly compared to other states. We have a few different parks, like Dresser and Tigerton but Wisconsin tends to have a lot more ATV/UTV and motocross areas then they do Jeep areas. The best way to know if you can take a Jeep there is just to look it up, some places that are OHV you can take a Jeep and some you can't. If you are free in a few weeks Apple Valley is doing an event, its nothing too crazy but its a good time and a fun weekend. Not to mention its about as good as it gets in Wisconsin, sadly they only are open 2 weekends each year in the summer and only 1 day in the winter. I have done Apple Valley a few times and will be going up if in June and most likely July if you are looking for any information.

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately, that's what I've been finding out. I was near Black River Falls and was intending go go on the Bell Mound trail from Black River to Millston as it was listed for OHV. Couldn't do it. They have signs, signs, everywhere signs. Jeeps need not apply. I did go on one short section that supposedly was alsoa County forest road. Lots of washboard from the ATVs. If I'm home for the Apple Valley weekend I may check it out.

I think to some degree yes the smaller vehicles do less damage. Alot of people are modding quads with giant mud tires now too so the difference may not be as much, but people have already made the connection of (big vehicles)=bad. Alot of trails would have to be widened to fit a jeep which would require an inherent change to the trails.

I also heard rumors (not sure if theres much if any truth to them) that alot of the ATV guys fought hard to keep fullsize vehicles off the trails a couple of decades ago. There are groups putting in a decent effort to change that though. Tigerton is a huge step in the right direction in my opinion. There are smaller trails on private land that do group rides periodically. Join some of the WI jeep groups on FB and keep your eye out.
