Odometer Issue - Reading 888888

So here's the issue- 2005 Jeep TJ with an automatic (don't know if that would change anything in the cpm or wiring). I was cruising down the road when I looked down and my gauge cluster was reading 888888. The trip meter and all other gauges were stilI working.

Checked the fuses and pulled the cluster off and cleaned the connections, none looked corroded or dirty. Reinstalled and still have the same issue. Where would everybody suggest going from here? Trace wires and look for issues? check voltages at connections?

Thanks for the help everybody. (y)

So to test the cluster you push the odometer button and turn the key to just before the crank position. What happens when you do that? Is that button sticky or the switch behind it bad?

Mileage is supposed to be stored in both cluster and PCM. If cluster is changed you might need to declare difference between old and new clusters if it comes to a sale.

Cluster check sweeps gauges and tests lights. In early TJs odometer displays all 1s,2s 3s etc. In late models number 8 is scrolled across, cluster software version SoF is displayed, and certain cluster faults will be reported.

@philbilly20 hey check out this post. Lots of reading and some success stories. Missing ground. Cleaned pins.
