Oversized Spare Tire Carrier

Trying to decide what to use to carry a 35” spare tire. I want a tailgate mounted solution.

I was originally planning to go with the MOPAR hinge reinforcement, but it’s only rated at 100 lbs and my wheel/tire combo will be over that.

Considering the TeraFlex Alpha hinge and carrier, but I’m kind of choking on the $1,100 price tag.

Rugged Ridge and Smittybilt both have solutions, but I’m concerned about rust in the long term. I know the body of both is aluminum, but the actual hinges and tire carrier parts are steel.

Anyone have any experience with any of these or other options they have used?

Teraflex, is the best of the best..IMO I have one on my JKR, plus they don’t rattle like so many do.

I have the Teraflex carrier and it's doing well with the 37 + KMC wheel combo (~125 lbs) I just upgraded to from 35s. It worked well with my previous tire/wheel setup and seems to be handling the 37 great as well so far. My Jeep is a 2015 and the carrier was installed by the previous owner, so I can't say for certain if it's the "Alpha" or a previous version. I'm pretty sure this is it:
I like how the depth is adjustable so even if your new wheels have less backspacing, you can keep the spare pretty tight to the tailgate and not have it stick out farther (which is certainly harder on the hinges and doesn't look good).

Thanks for the reply. That is the same carrier I had on my JK. The hinge design for the JL’s, both the stock and TeraFlex version, is very different from the JK’s. I agree that the TeraFlex hinge and carrier for the JK’s is a great unit. The price for the JL hinge is significantly more expensive. I don’t mind paying for the quality, but was checking to see if anyone had found something more economical with similar quality for the JL’s.

I got a knock off “Mopar” tailgate reinforcement on Amazon for $110, and a Smittybilt spare relocation bracket for $78. For less than $190 I was able to securely mount my 35-inch spare.

Granted, the total weight of my spare is 100 lbs —27 lbs for the wheel and 67 lbs for the tire.

I paid $664 in 2019 before discount @ Northridge4x4
This was paying for them separately. I think they were cheaper as a combo.
Looks like it is $815 now for the JK version.

Good grief $1100 for the JL version? I think I would go for a swing away tire carrier at that price point.
