Permanent removal of airbags?

I started to tear into the dash yesterday and the more and more I think about it the less and less I think I need the airbags. My old Jeep didn't have them and I totaled that Cherokee twice. My problem is legally, can I do this? Operationally removing them is no problem, but I still need to register and insure it. I've heard of people not having problems with inspections and aftermarket steering wheels, but the DPS website is very ambiguous about what is and isn't ok. Anyone in Texas or elsewhere have experience in this situation? Thanks! In case it makes a difference it's a 97.

I'd be surprised if they went off if you "bump something" softly enough that they weren't needed.

In other words, aren't the engineers who design these cognizant of what the Jeeps are subjected to and design them not to deploy in a "bump something while off-roading" situation?

Or is errant bag deployment in Jeeps something I'm unaware of? Does it happen to the point of being concerned?
