On my way to Harbor Freight to get grease and grease up the intermediate shaft.

I've seen mention of a sleeve/bushing that needs to be pushed back in to the firewall causing the steering knock that I have.

I can't find any pics of what it is supposed to look like.... Check it out!!

Normal to you?

Hey, I'm talking to myself :thumb:

Bought a grease gun, 3 oz carts and a needle fitting.

Filled up the boot with grease and worked it in the best I could.

Brought back memories of when I was 18 :hide: lol

Read in a thread it takes time for the grease to work into the splines, so will see .

So far it feels less clunky but still a bit of play/noise.

I'll post if it gets better with some time driving :)

So you didnt take yours out? Keep us posted!
Out? No. I just jammed the needle in and pumped away :)

Worked it in real good.

I just got back from a little drive around the block, so far so good.

I know it gets more pronounced as the boot/shaft heats up. Real test will be 2mrw to and from work.

I will keep you posted :)

SO F#C%ING SICK OF THE DEALER ON THIS.

GREASED MY BOOT LASTED LIKE A WEEK NOW IT IS WORSE THEN EVER. BEEN TO THE DEALER 5 TIMES NOW.

They told me to come down today and their Master tech would be there, mind you this is the 5TH time and I have told them what the problem is.

So I get there we go for a ride you can hear the banging and I am telling him the wheel is shaking along with the pedal. he goes OK great I know what it is. Great I am thinking they are going to replace the shaft. So I get back and they tell me we are going to replace a seal. WTF

I WALKED OUT.

ANYONE KNOW A DEALER SHIP IN RI THAT WILL HELP ME.

There's more than one Jeep dealer in Rhode Island? Where would they fit another one? Would it just be a catalog store?

Hey this sounds like someplace I can finally use up some of my Grease.....I have cases of it and these new rigs don't have a zerk fitting anywhere ! Maybe I'll pump some into that rubber boot thing......I suppose it'll drip out onto my feet as I'm driving down the road.
Good thread, I don't care how old it iz.....
Do you realize this thread has issues with GREASE and no one has argued about WHAT TYPE of grease we should be using ? This is really close to an OIL Thread ya know......
That might bring a whole new perspective of what to do about this Clunking noise....Maybe we are not using the CORRECT GREASE ???? How bout BACON Grease ? I love the smell of Bacon..... "BH"

I just looked at mine, because I have a "clunk" every once in a while...My plastic bushing is out showing about 1/2-3/4", I tried to drive it back with a plastic mallet, it didn't move and felt real solid, so I guess it's OK....
I noticed the angle of the steering shaft coming out of the firewall, looks like there must be another U-Joint on the other side under the dash, maybe these "clunks" are a product of a little binding in these joints. Has anyone had to replace these steering crosses ?
Just curious.... "BH"

There is another thread posted here recently ( in last month or so ) about steering "clunks"...
it seems like something loose was found under the dash. Sorry I can't add any more
to help you out.... Might try another search for more threads. "BH"
