What kind of oil filter are you using? It sounds like you have a bad anti-drain back valve. Very common when using cheap filters on the 3.8. Go with a top of the line filter and you should be ok. I use nothing but Mopar oil filters now, but have also had good results with the Fram TG. Stay away from the cheap orange one.

K&N will give you good results as well as anything made by WIX. (WIX makes the Mopar filter)

Tom is on the money, get a Wix filter I believe the ford/autolite brand has a good valve also from what I read. Napa Gold is by Wix also. Mine did the tap with my original mopar filter though.

I have the same issue. Started at 8000 and only when it's cold and sitting over night. And I use first line wix and mobil 1. I have searched this issue on neurmous threads. The filter and oil don't seem to make a difference. This is a small sample you are hearing and it's a wide spread problem. I've been told it's not harmful. I'm falling asleep and will add some of my theroies another time. Good night everyone. I hate that rattle in the am sometimes.

I use the same oil and filter, but mine stopped "at least I think". I'll have to listen more carefully, but we have been running -10F to +10F in the am here in ny that might make her hurt a bit. I keep her garaged now that I sold one of my other vehicles and it hasn't dropped below freezing in there. I'm thinking of running the penzoil platinum syn in my vehicles next changes. I'm hearing Mobil one is not what it used to be and the penzoil is only a bit more. I've been using M1 for 26 years, but there might be better products out there now.

The thinner oil recommendation may be due to tighter bearing clearances, I'm not sure. On a really cold morning there would definitely be a difference between 5w and 10w.

Not an engineer, but I had a 2.8 gm engine new in 85 that others were having all kind of oil related failures with it in blazers and camaros. It called for 5w 30 and I broke it in with dino then went with M1 10-30 and put about 130k on the clock when I sold it and it wasn't using any more oil than new. 1 quart every 5K miles. Had a small capacity pan it only held four quarts. I think you could get away with it if you use synthetic. That stuff is great in both temperature extremes. I really pamper my stuff though. I even wax my jeep....................

I have been thinking about the Pennzoil Platinum in the JK but still kinda believe in my M1 for now but its on my mind.[/QUOTE]

I agree there is waaaay too much data out there and I can't come to a hard conclusion. I think they are both excellent products and I change my oil between 5K-7k anyway, which for synthetic and my mild duty driving I shouldn't have any negative effect with either one.
