Go to the link I gave & in the trans section of the FSM for your yr it will show where to find the ID info. As to the switch, just look on both sides of the trans for wires coming from a switch. they should have the colors I gave above.

If you you go to this link & request a build sheet (you need the VIN) Jeep will send you a list of everything that was installed on your jeep from the factory. That is good info & should also tell you which trans you have.

Looks like it. Did you check the wire colors? Why are you looking for the switch? Are the b/ups not working? See if one of the wires have power with the key on, if so when you jump across the 2 wires the b/ups should come on.

Is this valid for a 99 Jeep auto too?

Hi,
my reverse lights only turn on(sometimes) when the gear is towards the P, nearer to R of course. The switch is probably worn off. Is there a photo of the switch on the trans to replace the right thing?
I have a 99 TJ, 2.5L automatic (you know, with the '60s transmission that should last forever..).
Thanks,
P.

The wire colors are violet/white & violet/black for ’99. Jumping them with the key on should turn the b/u lights on. Those wires on the auto trans are part of the park/neutral switch which have a 3 wire connector that also has a brown/light blue wire. The switch is on the left side just above the pan.

From the FSM:

SWITCH TEST
To test the switch, remove the wiring connector.
Test for continuity between the center terminal and
the transmission case. Continuity should exist only
when the transmission is in PARK or NEUTRAL.
Shift the transmission into REVERSE and test
continuity at the switch outer terminals. Continuity
should exist only when the transmission is in
REVERSE. Continuity should not exist between the
outer terminals and the case.
Check gearshift linkage adjustment before replacing
a switch that tests faulty.

Sorry to dig up an old thread, but this is information that I have been searching for for a while. First of all, GREAT information, but I do have a quick question. In the pics above by freemana157178, what is the black lever looking thing that is almost right in front of the backup light switch? Is that connected to the 4WD selector? If I shift it into 4WD will that piece move? When I attempted to change this part out the other day, that was in my way and I couldn't get a socket on it.
