Good morning gents, my 98 definitely has some rust on it. I want to replace a lot of parts and weld a lot and have begun to do so but I have a lot of rust and I am worried about more rust before I can replace what I need too. I was going to use rust converter on everything underneath except for the motor, valves ect. Wondering if anyone has any experience in this and also can I use it on my exhaust system? My whole pipe needs to be changed but before I do that can I use that for the time being?!?! Basically I just wanna run the whole bottom with this stuff till I replace.

I wouldn't use it on the exhaust. Everything else maybe... I have used POR-15 and it works well if you follow all the steps. It may not play well with rubber if you were to get it on body mounts, etc. It is awesome on metal, dang near permanant on your skin so be careful and its not cheap.

I suggest rust bullet. Saved the whole underbody of my XJ a year or two back. I also covered it with some rubber undercoat but that's optional and not always a good idea.

I have had good luck with Jasco Prep and Primer, which turns rust into a primered surface and stops the oxidation of the metal. I used it on an old trailer and my old suburban and I really liked the end result, but you will have to paint it at some point to maximize the protection.

I used Eastwood rust encapsulator really liked the end result painted over it with undercoating so far held up good and stopped further rust.

I just got some Eastwood Fast Etch this week. I sprayed it on my gas tank skid on the 01 I just bought. . I just wanted to see what it did. Well it looks like it is working because my skid is turning gray like bare metal.. We will see..

POR 15 all the way, hands down permanent... if following steps *exactly*! See my other threads on this. Good luck

My brother just used Chassis Saver on his project 97 Ford F150 frame after rebuilding the back end. Too soon to tell how well it holds up. I know we both used the rust converter stuff that turns rust black; it doesn't last long. Used on both our jeeps. (At least it doesn't last long in the Northeast where we like to salt our vehicles down all winter.)

I used corroseal on my frame and tow hitch. Worked excellent on the tow hitch and okay on the frame. This one is great for places where you can't fully sand down the rust. It sticks amazingly to continuous rust but pretty poorly to sanded down bare metal or metal/rust combinations. It is pretty affordable in the one gallon size and I'm sure I'll use it again and again.
