A friend gave me a soft top frame from a 00 tj. I'm sure it will fit my 04.

I'm going to put the frame on this weekend. I hope all parts are there.
Looking for suggestion for a replacement top.
By no means do I want to pay a lot for a top.

I run a hard top in the winter and no top in the summer.

Just looking for something in fall and spring to make it driveable in the mornings and in the rain.

I need to know what to look out for on the frame and where to get lower priced, decent quality top.
Thanks.

I got a used Smittybilt 9971235 replacement top from a local guy on Craigslist for $120.
It was never used or even installed for that matter.
New, it lists for $207 online.

Window panels have a 2013 date stamp in the plastic, so it would appear to have been sold 5-6 years ago.

Unless something has changed in their manufacturing process, the fit and construction of the top I got is really excellent for the money. It is very quiet and not floppy. Zippers are pretty heavy-duty. I like it. If I only get a year or two out of this one, I'll be extremely happy.

A lot of people criticize the Smittybilt top but mine treated me well for quite a few years. The thing fit incredibly well, better than my current Quadratop sailcloth top. If you're looking for a cheap top that'll last you a few years, Smittybilt might not be a bad option. Fabric is thin and stitching is cheap, but again, it does the job.

These were taken when the top was about 4 years old, which I would say is about the lifespan of the Smittybilt tops:

My 2003 came with the original factory frame and a Smittybilt replacement fabric on it. It wasn't loose when sitting still or on city streets, but on the highway if flapped a lot. I bought the Jeep in May and by late July I had three leaks at the two seams at the back (at the middle of the rear bow and at the middle and to one side of the middle bow). Then on the highway, the rear window zipper would come loose from the air pressure on the highway.

I replaced it with a Bestop Replace-A-Top and it was much thicker and tighter on the Jeep. In September at a Scouting event I met the PO and I got a lot of information about the Jeep. I mentioned that I had replaced the top and he expressed surprise when I mentioned the issues as the Smittybilt replacement top was only about 2 years old.

Fast forward 4 years and my Bestop RAT was still tight and zippers good. I did take the top off completely when it went in for paint (along with a lot of other stuff). I did not put it back on because the frame was getting in bad shape. Instead, I went with the Bestop Trektop NX (a frameless top) in Spice rather than black.

Too bad you are not in the S. Georgia/ Tallahassee, Fl area, I would give you my 4 year old RAT as it is still good. My frame is fairly well shot, but you wouldn't need it.

That was extremely generous to offer the OP your spare top! This forum is full of great people willing to lend a hand.

Mine had a 2013 date stamp on the windows. Maybe things were different then... Frame-less was what I really wanted, but $$ was an issue and warm weather was coming quick.

My factory top was shot! I could not resist a top that I could remove window panels or drop the top on a nice day and have the confidence I can get it all back together at the end of the day. No leaks, no noise and really a good tight fit. I put it on when the temperature was only in the low 60's and I had to zip all the side panels before attaching the back sail panels to the tub, it was TIGHT fit. But maybe that is just mine... Until I get a TrekTop NX or other frame-less top, it will do. Won't be more than 2 years tops (pun intended).

The thing I like about the trektop is that with the windows out and the sunrider flipped back there is almost no top on. Even with the windows out, you don't have the frame and top fabric bunched up on the rear of the tub.

The downside is that the rear sail panels are part of the side windows and have stiff plastic inside the fabric to add stability, so they are harder to store. If the weather is good I generally leave them at home when removed. Also because the top follows the sport bars in the rear rather than having a top bow at the back, the top of the window is not a high as on a stock top, so the top of the view in the rear view mirror is cut off a bit.

Would I go back - No. But it definitely wasn't inexpensive as I also had to get one with matching soft front windows to use on my half doors.

If the frame does not have the sunrider feature (where the front portion of the top over the front seats can be flipped back) that's unfortunate. My original frame did not have that which is another reason I replaced the entire top.

I hope your top frame came with the tailgate bar and clips. They are not inexpensive. If they didn't come back to me and I will see if I can find a way to send you my old ones as my new top came with new TG bar and clips (they are slightly different). My old TG bar does have a few nicks in the rubber seal, but since it is actually inside the window fabric it never leaked and was not visible unless you had the window out. (It actually fastens to the rear window). Tailgate bar and clips do not come with just the replacement top fabric.

The above link also includes a link to the installation of the TG clips if your Jeep never had a soft top installed.
