Speedometer not working

Hi;
I have a 1995 YJ six cylinder. The speedometer has worked since I had it and then it didn't. I replaced the Vehicle Speed Sensor in the trans tail shaft to no avail. I can't find a dedicated fuse and everything else seems to be working - gages, etc. Any suggestions? I can usually fix mechanical speedometers but have no experience with the electronic ones.
Thanks.

Even though there may not be a dedicated fuse, there could still be one out that's on the same circuit. You'd be amazed at what the engineers put on some of the fused circuits in vehicles. Get a 12v test light and check both sides of each and every fuse under dash (with key on) and under hood (key doesn't have to be on for these). You don't even have to pull the fuses.. You'll see a little metal piece on each side of the back of the fuse. Poke your test light end on each side of those and find the one that only lights up on one side. :thumb:

Unclip the wires going to the VSS at the t-case. 3 wires...1 is ground, 1 is power in, 1 is signal out. See if you have power in with a multi-meter.

And when you replaced it, did you get the VSS down in the t-case correctly, some are notched so they only go in 1 way, and others aren't and need to be installed correctly or they won't read the speed.

Hi;
The setup I have will allow four different positions each 90 degrees apart. I scribed the thing before I took it apart (had to remove a stuck bolt) and put it back the same way. I think. I'll check for power in. If none, I'll chase fuses. If power in, I'll try relocating.
I appreciate the advice.

Okay, big surprise. I checked the VSS with the key on and no juice to any of the three wires. Then I checked all of the fuses with a test light as advised and all had power on both sides. So I looked at the wiring diagram and discover that the white/orange wire runs to the speedometer, the orange wire runs to the ECM, and the blue/black wire is ground. The ECM?? So I tried checking for power at the orange wire with the engine running and it immediately stalled as soon as I touched the lead to it. Oh, poop, I thought I ruined the ECM. I plugged the VSS back in and the engine started and seems to be okay. Not what I expected at all. Have to think about that. By that time I was freezing and having had a bout of frostbite three weeks ago, decided to forgo any further disasters until tomorrow. Next up I will try rotating the VSS mounting cup thing 90 degrees in case I put it back in wrong. However, it is clear that the orange wire is continuous or the engine wouldn't have reacted to testing it. Still don't really get that.
Thanks for your suggestions.

Turning the thing 90 degrees in both directions still did not produce the results I had hoped for. Still no speedometer needle movement. I am at a loss as to how to proceed. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Were you using a test light or volt meter when you probed the ecm for power? Test lights give a shitload of resistance which is why I NEVER use them. Use one on an airbag harness by mistake and you might get one in the face. Used to happen in the shops I worked at. Guessing you just created some resistance for the ecm on the circuit and that could have stalled the jeep.

But it sounds like you have power, ground, and signal to the VSS. So I'd start looking at the speedo gauge itself.

Hi;
Yep, kind of where I am too. I intend to pull the speedometer, do a visual inspection as advised, hook the multi-meter to the input (white/pink) turn on the key and turn the driveshaft (one rear wheel off the ground) and see if there is a signal. If it's getting up there, then it's the speedometer.
Very cold here and big snow coming, so it's all a few days away.
Thanks for your advice.

Just in case anyone is still following along. Warmed up some today - above freezing for the first time in a long, long time. I pulled the speedometer out, checked the connector visually, and tried to get readings where the speedometer is attached to the housing. It is clearly marked ignition, ground and SP. Ground to ignition shows voltage, SP to ground shows voltage, but no pulse when the wheel turns. I replaced the VSS earlier and tried all the positions just in case, but with the same results. I may be using the multi-meter incorrectly. Anyway, I am trying to find a new (used) speedometer. Hopefully that will work. Maybe.

Still following along, I need to get into the same diagnostics one of these days but right now the body is one place, the transfer case is on the frame in a different place, and the wiring harness is in a box somewhere.

Before I started my rebuild/repower project the speedo was not working hence the need to get to the diagnostics some day.

Have you checked continuity with your tester from the speedo housing to the VSS? Make sure you don't have a bad wire in between?

And the conclusion in case anyone is still following: I received my new (used) speedometer today. While I had it apart, I replaced the gear with the right one for the larger tires and checked for continuity to the cluster. The wire was good. So I put in the new (used) speedometer and......drum roll please.....it worked. It would appear that I replaced the VSS unnecessarily. Thanks for all the help and good advice. I learned a lot and appreciate it.
