Strange transmission temperature behavior

2015 JKU-Rubicon with factory heavy-duty towing option:
Today I just observed a weird transmission fluid temperature indication on my dash's small information screen.
I was towing my boat to a nearby lake, only 2 miles but with hilly roads (roughly 700 ft elevation gain-loss) and I happened out of mere curiousity to program my screen for transmission fluid temperature. I watched the temperature essentially lock onto 170 degrees (it stays around that temperature, plus or minus a few) when fully warmed up, regardless of whether I'm towing or not.
But then I happened to shift into neutral for a roadway halt (flagman stopping traffic briefly) and the temperature indication JUMPED* to 208 degrees. Then when I put it in Drive, it JUMPED* down to 170 again.
*What puzzles me are these "JUMPS". These are are NOT merely rapidly rising or falling temperatures -- these are instantaneous changes of almost 40 degrees, as quick as snapping your finger. It's as if the temperature indicated was switching from one quantity of fluid to an altogether different one along with the shift between drive and neutral. I would have thought to see some transitional change in temperature, not a change as quick as a blink of an eye.
Does anyone know what is happening?
Thanks.

There is a weird "feature" in the programing of the trans temp indicator. It only reads the trans temp if you are in Drive or Reverse. If you are in Park or Neutral, for some reason, it incorrectly shows the engine coolant temp. If you search, you will see many have pointed out the issue. You can confirm by switching to coolant temp on the display. If you are in Park or Neutral it will be the same as the trans temp.

might be in neutral pump has less flow, use park waiting for a flag man. but 203 is not over heated it is warm though. But your running temps count more. The Jk has a external stacked plate type trans cooler. Its not part of the rad like older vehicles. It works rather well as it is. Unlike the 2011 down jeeps that use the rad to cool heat with heat....
