i notice it seems to be a community favorite. i was looking at a set of Yokohama Geolandar A/T-S's. just wanted to see what it was about the GY's everyone likes perhaps beyond the aggressive look.

i was going to get the duratracs after seeing a lot of people on here getting them... but after posting for a second opinion on a local forum (calgary, canada), I noticed that not everyone is so in love with these tires. the BIGGEST concern i've read about them is that the sidewalls are prone to punctures. on the other hand, they are supposed to be good on ice and excellent in snow.

i was recommended the Toyo Open Country MT instead of the DuraTracs, but doing more research first

i don't know about that. i've been on my share of trails over the past 4 or 5 months (with roots, rocks, and mud) and these tires have held up fine. in some spots it's the sidewalls that have carried my rig up some of the gullies. i am very happy with these tires.

It's a good All Terrain tire, so has a good reputation. Maybe a top AT choice but certainly not a top off-roading choice if you have rocky trails. Definitely worth considering on a DD as well.
not sure about the rocky trails thing. i know lots of guys that are running them and there's plenty of rocks up in ocala... have been running them with out issues. i'm not saying there aren't other fine tire choices, but in my experiences offroad they've done everything i've needed them to do...

The metrics of that make a "good" tire are varied and oftentimes exclusive of each other.

For example, it's hard to have excellent mud traction while simultaneously being a great commuter. It's hard to have sturdy sidewalls while maintaining a lightweight. Etc.

So you've got to balance these factors to find the tire that's best for you.

The DuraTrac reflects a good all around balance of the relevant metrics. There are tires that are better in any given category, but the improvements usually come at a cost in another category.

So the DuraTracs are going to be a very good general choice for most people most of the time. Hence their popularity.
yep... :thumb: guess i should have just let MTH say it.. i guess my only compliant with the DTs are that they aren't the advertised sizes... it'd be nice if they were as big.. or even a little bigger than published. that'd be pretty bad arse!

Good dry/wet/snow traction. Good cornering and agressive looks. Quiet for a tire tread of this design. Perhaps part of its popularity is the light weight. I see alot of Jeeps here in CO running them.

MTH must be a professor. He uses big words like metrics, oftentimes, exclusive, simultaneously, balance, and category. :D:hide:

Yep a professor of music. :thumb:

Hint: The man can play guitar better than anyone you know. Seriously. I'd bet on it--I have no idea who you know, but it's wildly unlikely that you know anybody who plays guitar better than ESP. :thumb:
Thanks I love my jeep almost as much as my guitar/s.

I picked them because of the overall performance on road and off. As much as I wish otherwise, I spend most of my miles on pavement. I have witnessed a sidewall puncture on a buddy's jeep but I can't say any other tire would have survived any better.

I'd love to know what the average life span of a set of Duratracs is for a mainly all on-road driven Jeep. I am so tempted to buy a set but without a mileage warranty I just don't know how long they're expected to last.

Long time. Mine are approaching 18k miles. Still look great.

What if I told you I knew hendrix back in the day?

This is my first wrangler so I'm not a real authority on it, but in selecting them I did a LOT of research first...basically selected them over the stock KM's cause where I live it rains A LOT and from what I had heard the stock KM's suck in the rain.

Snows here too, gets icey etc and in addition to being a good tire for that, it also happened to be one of the few out there that's snow rated, great in rain and a pretty aggressive off road tire (acutally, don't know of any others now that I think about it?).

As for wear, I had people telling me they wouldn't last long at all and since they are snow rated there is no wear warranty, but mine have over 32,000 miles on them now and I've still got another year plus (15,000 miles or so) left on them...not bad for a non-warrantable snow tire. But I am anal about rotating them (every oil change, and I'm anal about that too, every 4,000 miles).

When they finally need to be replaced I'll be doing my lift and 35" Duratracs at that time (well, in Duratracs I guess its actually a 315x70x17?).

Nope, not as good as ESP. He's too dead. :whistling:

:D

Statistically speaking, it's UNLIKELY you know anyone as good as he. Folks exist no doubt . . . but there aren't many of them.

I did enjoy the thread and MTH's response was probably the best that could be provided on the subject. :thumb:

I wonder what brand of guitar ESP plays. Could it be some company that goes by an acronym? I bet it is a PRS!
