I am looking to add a winch on the front of my Jeep. I was curious on what size winch every one has and what's a base size to look at. I know they go from 2,000lbs to 16,000lbs. What size would you recommend for a Jeep? I remember a tow truck driver once said you need 3 times the vehicle weight because of the suction you get when you are to the frame in mud. is that true or have you done good with the smaller ones? I would be using it for trails and mudding, not for rock crawling.

generally 2 times the vehicle weight is recommended, but that is somewhat flexible.

Jeep TJ's weigh around 4000-4500lbs in many cases, so 8000-9500lbs are the most popular winches.

But some people don't may much attention to the weight of their Jeep, and allow them to climb into the 6000lb range...but they don't think to change their winch to match....and it's not like any baby seals die or anything...the winch will stall out before the cable breaks in most cases....

I bought a 10K lb winch for my 2002 TJ but haven't gotten a chance to use it.
