Looking at taking a trip to Moab Utah next May. :) I'm trying to look ahead and figure out budgeting. I'd like to know where the best places to stay are at?

Where is the best area at? Stay in Moab or surrounding area.?

VRBO or Hotel?

Those who have been there would love to have your thoughts.

My wife, the snooty one who travels First Class etc., loved the Gonzo Inn in the center of town, a block off Main when we stayed there last month. I was there for a week before and after and I always stay at the Big Horn Lodge about 3 blocks south of there. Nothing particularly memorable about it but it's cheap-ish, it's an easy walk to where the action is at night, and you park outside your door if you're staying on the ground floor. And they stock the room with rags for cleaning your stuff up with.

I've been staying at Big Horn once or twice a year since 2001. Very consistent place. During April and May, Gonzo was 220, Big Horn was 110. In the off season, when I'm usually there (November, Feb or March) Big Horn is 55 or 60, iirc.

I stayed at the big horn years ago and it was fine for a "guys" trip and if you need to haul your gear inside. My fiancé and I most recently stayed at the Holiday Inn express on the north side of town. I liked it, all the amenities, clean, quiet and a secure parking lot. Downside is it's a long walk to town, but a short drive. I think it was about $150 in August.

"Surrounding areas" is camping.
Ive had luck in the Rustic Inn,stayed there twice. Just your run of the mill motel, but its in the center of town, a block off of Main. Has big rooms and some (maybe all) have kitchenettes. Rooms are around $80/nt there
Ive also stayed in the River Canyon Lodge. Its more "hotel-y" but has smaller rooms for a few bucks more.
Whenever we go, we look at the Rustic Inn first then elsewhere

The Comfort Suite was great, the waffles arent that tasty at breakfast. But there are so many spots to camp there you could definitely find a spot with incredible views. Be sure to go to Arches or Canyonlands after dark and just take some time to watch the stars. Being from the city its a totally different night sky... Just incredible
