Willys or Sport S build like it?

I've been planning to get a jeep for a while now. Started comparing models/features/options. Lookin at a 2dr w/ Auto (wife requires).

Intended use: daily driver w/ a short 8 min commute and weekend fun. Short trips/overnight to the beach, some off-roading with the local jeep club, etc. We live in Florida on the Treasure Coast so less rock crawling and more dirt trails, sand, mud and ruts depending on the season. It rains during the summer, and dry season is in winter when the temp/humidity is better for being outdoors anyway (70s - 80s).

The Build Options: With the type of trails I plan on driving here in FL I'm looking at 2 Dr, Auto with LSD = Willys or Sport S. I plan on getting the Selec-Trac fulltime 4wd system - not that I need it but there are days when we get intermittent weather (ease of use for wife on wed/dry mixed roads).

The two builds are exactly the same and are almost the same price:
2.0 Turbo w/ Auto
Selec-Trac III Fulltime 4wd 2.72 to 1
3-pc Hard Top
Technology group
Convenience group
Tow package (worth it for the Aux switches pre-wired?)
LSD

Differences
Wheels
- Willys comes with the Black Moab 7.5 x 17 w/ 255/75R17C Tires Destination MUD Terrains
Lighting - Willys comes with LED lighting (vs Sport S +$1,145 option)
Lift - Willys comes with Rubicon shocks (vs Sport S I'd have to lift w/ Ruby takeoffs, Mopar lift or other)
Brakes - Willys gets the bigger Sahara/Ruby brakes

Seats - Sport has a leather seat option $1,175 but I can get a Willys then get Katzkin seats for $1,000 - $1,200(?)

So Willys it is + the fulltime 4wd - what am I missing and let me hear your opinions.

I would always pick the Willys over the Sport S, just a lot more standard equipment on the Willys. If you want the LED headlights, rock rails, Limited Slip rear end, Rubicon shocks and suspension in some areas, plus many other standard features you will find the Willys the best bang for the buck. The Sport S with the standard wheels and tires just looks and is pretty much a base model, where the Willys is ready to go off-roading if wanted.

Aldo, from all my research into the various models of Wranglers, it is still unclear to me if indeed the Willys comes with the same heavy-duty brakes and shocks as the Rubicon --- I have read completely conflicting information on this. That also leaves equally unclear the question of whether the same (regarding the brakes and shocks) is true for the Willys Sport. Do you happen to know about this?

you forgot to list that really cool Willys Decal ;)😀

In answer to your question, i would go with the willy's as trainman said, so much more. it does sit higher and can be a challenge without a step for us shorter types.

I really wanted the willy's but building what i wanted had a wait time of 12-20 weeks and it got up to about $45500 MSRP with all my options.

Basically, i ended up with a new rubicon coming into the dealer lot with no wait for $46.995 with everything i wanted (plus the lockers, sway bar etc that Ididn't plan on .) but I do need to add a trailer hitch which was in the Willy's build number.

1.5K difference less 3-4 months wait......

I really didn't need the lockers,,,,,,, well until I do.....

I do think the trailer package is worth it. Bigger battery, bigger alternator (to charge trailer stuff) aux pre wired trailer hitch and pins set up for $895 (2021 price)

as I said, I didn't get the hitch and wiring and the dealer just quoted $800 for the hitch and wiring (without the larger battery and alternator and pre wired aux buttons). The Aux panel is also $400++jjust to purchase ( wherever I saw it) so it's got to be $2K+ to add all that yourself later... which you probably wouldn't do.

I regret not getting it in the package but since I didnt know if I would ever use it,,, it was a compromise in these times of limited jeep availability

Thanks for the replies. With my intended use as DD and living in FL the Jeep is more likely to see wet roads, sand and mud vs rock crawling so I figure an LSD and full-time 4wd are more useful than lockers and sway disco.

Price wise to get the equip I'd like on each (before discounts)
Rubicon $46,640 (or +$1500 for LED pkg)
Willys $43,835

That's about $3,000 more for a Ruby but I'd be giving up the LED. With the LED its $4,500. I also like the Moab wheels better than the ruby wheels. Tires are a wash to me 255/75 vs 285/70 = 1.2" wider & 0.6" taller

What am I really getting that is better as a daily driver and weekend trail rig - better gearing and lockers?

I can wait a few months to get exactly what I want to be honest. I'd rather put that money toward some springs and a track bar (ruby take offs or other), some side-step rails, and Katzkin leather seats. Plus a winch and bumpers... and maybe still have some cash left over for fun stuff.

Gangplank, there is no wrong answer here, you're getting a Jeep!

i agree the LED lights are a plus,,, in my case the LED wasn't a showstopper either way
Plus instead of trying to figure out if the willys suspension was "as good or the same" as the Rubi, i just bought the rubi" i will probably never need lockers but i won't regret not having them either.

so For me an almost perfect jeep (to my specs) today on the lot beat the 3-5 month wait for what i calculated as 1500 for the perfect jeep.......I have wanted a jeep for 36 years to buy one of the most "impractical" (for me) vehicles I ever bought.

i finally had the money in hand , an agreeable wife and kids out of college.... I was done waiting.

each to his own!!! that being said if you are waiting anyway it should be what you want, i really liked the willy's I wanted the willys but 300/month wasn't going to make me wait for the willys

your calculation is different and also accurate for you. If i were you, i would get the willy's and not look back.

your personality seems a lot like mine in weighing out the alternatives, the value of the options vs what i need. what the money i am spending could otherwise be spending it on. ..etc....
i have done that my entire life.....but this time...

Just like the line in the 1980s move risky business "Sometimes you just have to say WTF" and go for it! 🤣😂😎

good luck!

I will order a new 2022 Willys Sport 2dr with only one option, A/C and a list price of $34,200. It will be a V6 with 6 spd. manual trans, no power windows, or door locks and the stock radio. This will be my TOY and will probably only put around 2000 milers per year on it and be a street cruiser to the DQ, Sonic, Whataburger, etc., what else would a 76 year old guy do with a Wrangler, off roading you got to be kidding. I intend to get every penny back in 5-6 years that I paid for this Jeep, just look what they are selling for today.

Thanks for that information and for posting that photo of your sticker, Pismo! I really appreciate it.

I will point out, however, that most information that I have seen so far regarding the brakes on the different JL models states that ALL of them, except for the Rubicon, come with the same described "4 wheel disc Heavy-Duty brakes". So your Willys Sport brakes do appear to be 'heavy-duty', all right, but are they the same brakes as those on the Rubicon? That is the real question.
