You'll need a wire cutter, wire stripper, and some connectors. All of which you can get at an auto parts store or Wal-Mart.

The connectors are basically a piece of metal tube where you insert each end of a wire and crimp it closed to connect them.

 

sounds pretty easy...thanks a lot for the quick reply....the new light actually already has the connnector...its just a little blue tube...piece of metal inside the middle of it...was wonderin what that was for

 

I would suggest shrink wrap tubing and not using electrical tape.

 

x2, This is a good idea especially for solder-less splices.

 

Or wrap the wires together, solder, and heat shrink then place in a loom and taped up if you want it to look factory.

 

another option is to use liquid tape after crimping or soldering your connections. dries pretty quick and easy to use... no heatgun or hairdryers needed.

 

I always do the heat shrink with a cigarette lighter, there are millions of ways to make a connection, this should turn into a 50 page thread:rofl:

 

i will put some covering over the wires...i just don't want the connection to break...i think the crimped connector with some covering should do nicely.

 

do yourself a favor for your future electrical adventures, go buy a soldering gun. they are like 17 bucks at home depot or some place like that and solder isn't that much either, if won't loose connection and it just looks and works better. and do the heat shrink thing too.

 

sooo...to make the splice...

pull the wire covering back on both wires of the new brake light...cut wires off stock brake light... pull the wire covering back on them...insert the 2 new wires in one end and the 2 stock wires in the other and then crimp together...is this correct??

i will put covering over the crimped part to ensure water doesn't touch the uncovered wires...but what about the rest of the wire that already has a cover over the wire...do i need to put any other kind of cover over it? i may put on a cover just two keep the two different wires together and make it look better...i could zip tie the wires together...wouldn't look as good as one solid cover though. don't want the two pieces of wiring hanging and flopping everywhere.

There are many different styles of wire/multi-wire cover. Essentially a tube with a slit all the way so you can slip the wire(s) into it. Most likely place to get 'em would be an auto parts store. Made both in rubber (like an extension cord) or stiff plastic (like you'll see in some engine compartments) made to protect from some heat also. Keeps the wires together, cleaner, and you can secure the cable cover without pinching the wire so bad (when you ziptie).

 

just for curiosity and learnings sake...

lets say i have a stock brake light (just an example) with stock wiring...i want to make the wiring longer...could i cut the wiring and get some more extra wiring and splice it to the stock wiring? (in other words...add some extra wiring to the middle...1 splice to the wiring still hanging from the light and 1 splice on the part cut off...to extend and make longer...)

 

I wouldn't see why not as long as you are using the same or close to the same gauge of wire.
