YJ underhold lamp retrofit a TJ under hood lamp

The under hood lamp has been missing for years and I wanted to replace it. I thought I could use the one that came with a TJ but the connectors are slightly different.

The question is the under hood lamp that originally came with the YJ also a mercury switched on/off or was it controlled by the lights dimmer switch like the dome light?

Also, is the red live all the time. I was thinking I could just cut off the female plug and connect it directly to the TK under hood lamp.

Or should I just go with an LED under hood lighting solution.

Mine is a mercury switch and I have the bulb removed because it is annoying to have it on everytime the hood is open, even in broad daylight and it really doesn't produce a useable amount of light.
I vote for switched LED, for you

x2, it's a mercury switch and i disconnected mine because it don't put out enough usable light anyways. If you put a LED it might be ok but i just have no need for running my battery dead when i leave the hood up.

I vote for a $19.99 Magnetic mount tac light. 2 pak, no wiring involved

If you install a vintage retractable XJ under hood lamp - you get the retro cool points for your YJ.

Light still stinks. But you can show off for the ladies...
