So im not too good with tools and all that. Definitely have become more handy because of my jeep but still need help on some fundamental type stuff. A few weeks back I ruined about 5 of my dads drill bits, trying to put a hole in my pretty thick steel bumper. I need to drill some more holes and just want to know if there is a certain type of bit I need. Id rather ask you guys than the guys at the store.

start with a small pilot hole and then use one of these that suites your size Search Results for*step drill bit*at The Home Depot then while your at home depot stop in the plumbing section and pick up "thread cutting oil" to keep the bit cool.
Its technique that is killing your drill bits. Spin slow and push hard. Spinning fast overheats the bit and dulls it.

A stock JK bumper should be easy. Drilling my steel winch plate took forever.

both of these... :thumb:

WD-40 works great as lubricant and keeps the bit cool.
It works well for 1 or 2 holes, anything more do you self a favor and get the oil, keeps the bit super cool! My cheapo irin drill bit is a champ. I had to drill 40 1/2" holes in 1/4 steel and 25 holes in aluminum and my bit is good for atleast 60 more. I owe it all to the oil...And Technique! :)

^This and if you don't want to invest in a step drill bit, get a cobalt bit.
^Bingo! Split tip cobalt bits are best when drilling most metals, steel bits are for arts & crafts. :D

You know how I learned? By drilling full throttle and burning out bits. Welcome to the club.

^yep

I'm about to install a drag link flip which involves drilling the knuckle. Researching trying to figure out the best way to do this. I found many people make the mistake of using higher rpms and burning out the bit
