All jeep wranglers 2007 and after do require a data interface module to be installed on the new radio's harness. In the Jeeps, it doesn't have much to do with airbags, more with turning the radio on and off. In 2007, Jeep added a data system to the wrangler, and many convenience features are controlled with a single data wire. Your radio is no exception, and the factory harness does not have a traditional 12 volt ignition wire, it's turned on with the data wire. Aftermarket radio's cannot "understand" the data wire, so the module converts the data wire into a traditional 12v ignition wire to turn the new radio on and off. Many of these modules also provide quick connectors to easily install steering wheel control modules and will sometimes provide extra wires for installing video/navigation radios as well.
For 2007 and up wranglers without the Infinity sound system, use the Axxess module XSVI-6522-NAV, and if you have the Infinity sound system, get the CHTO-013. Either of these can be purchased at a Best Buy or local car audio shop; the XSVI will set you back about $80, while the CHTO is about $130.
You *can* install a radio without these harnesses by running a new 12v ignition wire from your cigarette lighter socket or fuse box, however you may throw check engine or airbag lights because the data system no longer sees the radio installed. Any reputable installation shop would not give this option; it is essentially "rigging it up"
