Used Jeep warranty? Help!

I am buying a used JKUHR 2016 tomorrow morning with 4k miles and from what I understand the OEM warranty is no longer valid because the original owner sold it to a dealer and now I am buying it from the dealer and therefore the 3rd owner.

G. No Coverage to Second Purchaser if Transfer Fee is Not Paid
If you do not transfer the remainder of the 7 year/70,000 mile Powertrain Limited Warranty coverage and pay the transfer fee, or if you are the third (or subsequent) owner of the vehicle, the Powertrain Limited Warranty described in this Section 2.2 does not apply to you.

Would I technically count as the 3rd owner in this case? If so, should I purchase a new warranty and if so from the seller (Toyota dealership), from a Jeep dealership or go 3rd party?

I am going to search as well, but am still working tonight so I wanted to post as well.

Thank you!

Have the dealer include a 3-year bumper-to-bumper warranty, with $0 deductible, into the deal. Seriously, it is the least they can do.

As already mentioned: the dealer shouldn't have titled the vehicle, If they did, it is on them.

Unless the salesman is making up stories to get more money...

So as long as the dealer didn't title it, I will be able to pay the $150 to transfer the warranty? If so, I am thinking I will self-insure the rest.

The warranty should transfer. I've never geard of a dealer being considered an owner, but then again, I'm not a lawyer.

I don't know how the dealer is getting around the factory 3/36 warranty, or if it's just marketing to get additional cash. If you're set on buying that particular JK I think paying $150 to have a "warranty" might be the best $150 you spend. I wouldn't purchase any JK if there wasn't a powertrain warranty. Your call. Are you sure that the dealer is actually on the title as the second owner? I would want to actually see proof of that. Good luck.

I'm happy to spend the $150. If that is not an option, should I pass?

Who is telling you that you are not eligible for the warranty? The Salesman? If so, I would call there bluff and tell them a 2016 with no warranty is worth less than they are asking and therefore the Jeep is worth 2k less (based on what these brick and motor dealers sell extended warranties for) After getting the price reduced I would then contact the forum sponsor that sells the lifetime warranty for $2400 and be good to go.

There is no way the dealer would title the vehicle because they would have to pay taxes upon filing the title. Even if the owner of the dealership used this Jeep as a personal vehicle they would just slap Dealer Tags on it to avoid paying the taxes.

That is a Mopar care warranty that the original owner paid for not the standard factory warranty. You do have to pay a transfer fee. 7/70000 not standard 3/36000 bumper to bumper.

Let me start by saying, its not a Minivan. So, the Minivan 7/70 power train warranty will not apply regardless. The 2016 Wrangler comes with a 5/60 power train warranty (in addition to the 3/36 bumper-to-bumper warranty).

As to counting owners, unless the dealer actually registered the Wrangler (put non-dealer plates on it), I don't think they count as an owner.

If you are at all worried about the warranty, I would take the VIN to a nearby Jeep dealer, and ask then to verify the status of any/all warranties on this particular vehicle. The last think you would want to find out after purchase, is that for some reason, FCA has voided the warranties.

This might be a better reference link: http://www.jeep.com/crossbrand/6.7/warranty/pdf/2016-Jeep-Gas_5_60-Generic_Warranty.pdf

Could this possibly be a dealer buyback under the lemon law? I ran across a 2014 that seemed fishy to me. It was a 2014 with under 2000 miles. It was titled as a factory vehicle, sold to an individual and then sold to a dealer again in less than 6 months. Dealer was shown as an owner on the Carfax.

Ah, a TOYOTA dealership. It all makes sense now. They just don't know how Jeep works...

But that was a fancy story they concocted to try to cover their asses in case Jeep charged a transfer fee.

Sounds like you are good to go!

Just purchased a 2016 JKU Rubicon with 11,500 miles on it last week. Took to local dealer for a few issues that I assumed would be covered under warranty. Just informed that vehicle was from Canada & has NO WARRANTY. Explains why I got such a good deal. Contacted Jeep - was told that because is was sold at an auction block then to a dealer, warranty is void - no way to transfer. I have contacted the dealer as the vehicle description stated that the balance of the factory warranty existed, so I thought I had a 3yr/36K warranty on the vehicle.....waiting to hear from him. Big time REGRET here.

How did this turn out for you? There are SOME Canadian titled Jeeps that ARE eligible for warranty coverage in the USA. Depending on who owned your vehicle in Canada will determine that coverage. How it was sold (auction, private owner) is meaningless. There are dealers in the US selling Jeeps claiming to have warranties that are not eligible for factory warranties vs after market warranties.

Turned out good - My dealer actually worked with another Jeep dealer to get the vehicle registered in my name & I have already had warranty work done on the vehicle. My understanding is that it all depends on who the vehicle was sold to & how the paperwork was handled, as to if the warranty can be transferred. Sure was a wake up call for me....
I was sweating bullets!
