2.9 stroker kit build-up

Finally after considering a 4.0 swap and talking to a guy who have done the swap, id rather take a spare 2.5 and build it on the side :)

My weapon of choice, the 505 performance stroker (torque monster) kit which include :


4340 I beam rods, Ross custom piston 8.75 to 10.75. Select bore 20. 30. 40. .60 .80 .100
Performance brackets, oil pump, injectors 24lb stage I, II, III race cam


I wish to go 9.5 compression for .30 over, the kit is 1699$ so.... im starting to save money :D (pay raise at work)


Instead of porting and planning the head of the engine and spend a tons of money.... they have one already build for 575$

stats for the pro-rock head

fully ported cylinder head 2.00 intake and 1.570 exhaust valves Chrome molly spring retainer keepers .580 max lift hydraulic and solid cams compatible. Raised exhaust runners and profiled intake runners flowing over 300 at .500 lift on intake side and 180 plus exhaust


That build up thread will be slow as i have a family to take care of but im going in 2 weeks to pick up my spare 2.5 for 150$ and its a runner!!!
before that engine is going in my Yj i will do an ax15 swap with a SYE

Subbed. Interested to see how much power you get out of that 2.5 and how reliable it is once stroked. I'm pretty committed to doing a V8 install in mine but this is worth watching regardless.

i will keep on the thread too. i like to hear when people try new things and doing some work to the good ol 2.5 sounds cool

the transmission doesnt have to be an AX-15, the back of the 2.5L Jeep engine is the "GM corporate pattern" or sometimes called the "GM Metric pattern", also called the "GM 60 degree pattern" and there is a ton of bell housings that will bolt to the 2.5L.

96-00 Dakota 2.5L bellhousing, Connects all to any Jeep 2.5L L4. Because of it's GM 60 degree V6 inherited bolt pattern, also works with any Buick FWD V6 and supercharged V6, any Chevrolet 2.8/3.1/3.4 V6, any Cadillac 4.1/4.5/4.9 V8 and with a minor modification, any Olds Aurora DOHC V8 and Cadillac DOHC Northstar V8. Also bolts to any Isuzu 3.2\3.5 DOHC V6.

So that is a wide range of 4x4 transmissions to choose from, also a wide range of engines that will swap in where your 2.5 is, the mounts and ECMs are of course the hard part, and the electronics package has to be done from scratch if you go to an AW4 but Stew Wilson has done this and he has a lot of good info on his site about that exact swap.

You can also go to an AW4 transmission using a Isuzu Rodeo 3.2/3.5 bellhousing which has the GM 60 degree pattern and will bolt to your 2.5. Other 60 degree engine options are a supercharged 3800, Aurora V8, or Northstar and LS4.

The upshot is this, you can upgrade to a far better transmission of your choice, build the 2.5 stroker, and if you decide you want to go a different route at some point you have a plethera of engines to choose from that have the same bolt pattern as your 2.5, no matter what you'll have to fabricate mounts, so have fun with it.

Right now I'm building for my 2.5l TJ this -

Fiero 2.8 (painted to match Jeep) - Isuzu bell housing - AW4 - Atlas II

So you can do almost anything with any type of engine, keep in mind a 9500 rpm wont help you so the ricer engines arent good, but for low end torque most of the Isuzu / GM 60 degree LS and V6 engines and Cummins 4BT diesels can be rebuilt for ultimate low rpm torque.

What will that increase in torque be used for?

What will it buy you?

Is 3500 rpm a practical rpm for the application of that torque?

Is it a trail Jeep or a race Jeep?

Too many times people get focused on 1 or 2 aspects of a project and neglect an overall look at all aspects of it.

I believe the I6 4.0 is 200+ ftlbs at 1200 rpm and up. Very flat. Not as exciting or unique as a stroked 2.5, but....

A nice project that ll be way cheaper to put in than the 4.0 plus i kinda love the idea of a big 4 banger

In my case, Yes, the whole powerband gets up, more power to work with plus i would like to run 33s and still be able to be a DD without to much of an PITA to drive

Mostly a daily driver Jeep, the head im not sure yet if i really want it.... im afraid ill need to rev it to the moon (which i dont want) to produce any kind of power

Sorry for being a moron but what would this entail?

I'd love to beef up my 2.5 when ever the rebuild comes around and if I'd be able to sniff 140rwhp I'd be estatic

New Transmission - yes
New Rods - yes
New Pistons - yes
New Injectors (Assuming use ford 24#) yes
New Cams - yes

Do you keep the same head? Same block?

New transmission, either a G58 from toyota (an ax5 build with stronger component) or an Ax15 swap.
New rod, hell yeah some 4340 I beam rod same lenght
New pistons but .30 bigger, i dont wanna go too big might have cooling issues otherwise
they have some 24 lbs injectors coming with the kit so ill use them :D
i have the choice between 3 camshafts but i dunno which one ill go with, i dont wanna have to rev it to the moon to have power

Ill simply go with the race head that they re selling,for 575$ itw way cheaper than rebuilding, porting, polishin and buying stiffer spring (camshaft) new rocker(mileage) etc etc.

Same block : Yes but cleaned and bored .30 over

im interested to put Timing gear instead of a chain (had that on my drag car loved the sound of it) but i cant find a kit for the 2.5.... :(

Depending of which cam you use 505 performance were saying that if i use the proper camshaft itll help me having more torque than the stock head depending where the cam is suppose to be.... but i have to be honest im doing a lot of research right now for that reason, i dont wanna loose all of the low end torque but having a crazy amount in the upper RPM

Im a newbee to all the mechanical stuff, but after reading the forum for a couple of months its good to see someone doing things with the 2.5. IMHO it gets such a bad rap in general. Im in, and anxious to see your outcome!!!

i asked about the 2.5 stoker earlier on another thread here and got made fun of. lol.
I guess I don't get the appeal. Let's say you put $2000 into custom decking and machine work, built internals, etc. and you get another 30 HP out of it. Now you're at what, 150HP? Wouldn't it make more sense to take that same money and do a swap for a more stout motor? Not making fun of you or anything, just trying to understand why this would be an option when it seems the payout is inadequate. Other than the "because I can" factor, what's the appeal?

After reading some of the horror stories connected to buying some of the "remanufactured engines" I went on 505 webb site after reading your post and considering purchasing one of their 2.5 stroker engines! I t will just take that much longer to save for it.
