I need to remove it and inspect to see if the valve is failing or my compressor is failing. The repair manual says to take the intake manifold off but I'm wondering if anyone has done it (at least removal of the valve) without taking the intake manifold off. Looks like a simple case of 3 screws total and 2 green O-rings.

I'm pretty sure you CAN'T get at the X-valve without removing the intake. I don't think it's a bolt holding the ac manifold in place on the firewall but rather a stud. You have to undo the nut then pull the manifold BACK first to clear the stud then remove upwards.
