Thanks again! I will try it tonight. If it doesn't work I will either need to live with it or try to down grade the firmware to 50.01.01.

I spoke with garmin customer support and they said; sorry we messed up your navigation, but you will need to go see the dealer to get it fixed. I'm in month 37 of the 36 month warranty.

I found another file that was supposed to be 7.11, but the file size was smaller than what I thought it was supposed to be. It got the nav out of the boot loop but put it into 'image not found' mode. The file size is just larger than the 5.11 version so I wonder if it's actually 5.19.

What's interesting is the 2020.20 supplement maps don't appear to be loaded. So, I don't know if the nav version can't load them or if it's because I reinitialized the memory and harddrive and reset factory defaults.

I always do the Garmin software update by means of engineering menu (emergency upgrade) and it upgrades very well.

Hello, Thanks for all of the great info here.

I just bought a 2012 Sahara JKU with a blown engine (my first jeep), put in a complete engine out of a 2014 with 50k miles on it, working out a few of the bugs (my heater/ac doors going through a full cycle every time a door is opened :)) and just getting around to the 430N update (I don't think this unit has ever been updated). Showing GPS 2.9, text 2.6, audio 2.3. and firmware of 33.00.41. Map is from 2011.

I have read this entire thread top to bottom at least a few times now.

I have downloaded the 2020.20 unlocked (thank you). I have also downloaded the 50.x firmware. A few questions:

Will this map version work properly on my current software (gps 2.9)?
Second question, i saw a link for 7.11 GPS (which I downloaded), but read a post that said one must go 3->5->7. Does anyone have a link for 5? Can I go from 2.9 to 5 to 7? Are these appropriate for a 2012 RHB?

I believe that junction views will work properly on this unit with 50.x.x, yes? If so, which file in the link for 2020.20 is the JCV?

Please confirm my steps are correct (which I will add to based on answers to my questions above):

Update GPS software (before or after map update or not at all?)
Update map first staying on current 33.x firmware version
Formatted Fat32 USB with \Garmin\gmapprom.img and \Garmin\jcv\(filetobenamed.jcv)

Assuming success, update to 50.x firmware (which I downloaded from MyGig onto a formatted USB Fat32)

Are there updates available for voice?

Will any of these updates fix the problem with the GPS time that started in the April time frame (before I bought the jeep)? According to Garmin they have no plan to fix it for these older units, GPS date is wrong and can't be set manually, which puts the time off by 1 hour (due to it not having correct date for DST adjustments).

I very much appreciate any direction, links, insights before I pull the trigger.

Thanks,
Steve

I downloaded these files ffrom garmin that are for a handheld model and the version is 2020.20. They are in a folder called Garmin. these are the files

6f928ac1-4c47-40df-9391-b88c89e8ac95.gma
gmapsupp.img

Will these work?

From what I recall the 5.11 garmin software is on the 50.01.01 disk image so it will prompt when you update.

Hi guys, just bought a car with 2011 RHB and original versions. Trying to update maps, and having a hard time figuring out what the latest info is for the 2011. If I am on 33.xx.xx, I can update using gmapprom.img and JCV, but only up to the 2014 files, is that correct? I tried with newer map versions but the updates just failed (downloading the 2014.20 now but it's saying it's gonna take like 20 hours...), so just want to make sure I'm not wasting my time with the 2014.

Also, is 50.00.07 the latest "safe" update for the 2011 to not lose the JCV update functionality? Or does it even matter if the 2014 is the newest I can install? Sorry for the noob questions that have probably been answered 100 times, but I've spent a few hours today combing this thread and not seeing definitive answers.

Sully 51,

I'm not speaking from experience yet, but I do know you can buy 2017 maps directly from Chrysler for my radio, so I have to believe your vintage radio will support at least that. I have the same unit, 2012. When I put in my VIN/unit ID on the website for map updates, it tells me I can upgrade to 2017 maps for $99. I'm planning to do the following based on my reading here:

1 Update my unit to 50.x so I get the 5.x version of GPS
2 Back rev my unit back to 33.x so I can load maps (apparently 50.x won't allow a map update, but I've read conflicting info in this thread...may try the map first and if it fails, downgrade)
3 uprev to 50.x again.
4 update to 7.11 GPS

If I run into issues I may change it up in terms of order. At the end of the day, my goal is to get 2020.20 maps with junction views working running on 50.x and 7.x.

I'm hoping that the GPS updates will fix the time issue these units have that Garmin isn't going to fix for us.

I will update in the next few days with my results.

I have 3 16GB USB 2.0 flash drives. One with V33 firmware, one with V50 firmware, one with 2020.20 map and JCV.

Thanks,
Steve

I just wish I could find a concise post with the full update method for a 2011. I've seen some say they were able to load 2019.30 with JCV no problem using the 33.xx.xx software, but other posts saying the 2019 maps aren't usable on the 3.00 GPS software. Every time I see someone mention to upgrade the GPS software in engineering mode, they link to the fcagroup site to get the firmware, but when I put my unit ID in on that site, it says the software is bundled with the map update, not a separate download, so I can't get it. Garmin Express gives me the same info (though I may be using it wrong... I put the 33.xx.xx software update on a USB stick and try to get GE to recognize that for my unit and it doesn't, so it has be go through and choose the car brand, which tells me the software is bundled with the map purchase).

So... Here's the rundown of what I've done.

1. Updated unit to 33.01.23
2. Updated unit to 50.00.07 (Do I need to go to 50.01.01? avoid 50.01.01? This updates the GPS to 5 correct? If I do that do I lose JCV?)

3. Converted back to 33.01.23
4. Tried installing 2020.20, 2019.10, 2015.30 maps as main with JCV - All will read files for about 1 minute, then say map update did not complete - PND update successful.
5. Tried installing 2015.30 as supplemental last night - gave up after sitting on "reading files" for 2 1/2 hours.

OK well I updated to 50.01.01 - the Garmin update to 5 did not happen during this update. So my current versions are 50.01.01, Garmin 3.00, map OEM City Navigator North America + Mexico NT 2011 ALL.

I have since attempted to install maps again, and am getting different results now (though still failing).

I tried with 2020.20 w/JCV and 2015.30 w/JCV
On both, it sees the update, reads files for a while, asks if I want to update (yes), says I will need unlock code, I put in unlock code from jetmouse, it looks like it works, then says PND not updated, and Update was not installed. At this point, doesn't matter if I format USB, use a different USB, it won't ask me for unlock code again for that map version. If I try again, it asks if I want to update, says it can take 2 hours, then just goes to PND not updated.

I'm close to giving up on this stupid thing. I'm no stranger to tech and firmware updates and software updates, and this is the worst time I've ever had with any update to anything ever.

So, I had my go at it (several times). I initially updated to 50.x to see if it would update the GPS software, it did not. When I was done, the radio firmware was updated, all other versions showed the same as they did prior to upgrade. When I tried to do the map update, it asked me for an unlock code. I didn't have jetmouse, so I couldn't try that piece.

I then downgraded back to 33.x, this time it did update the GPS software from 2.6 to 2.9, text to 3.00. I tried to load the maps again, same thing...despite the thread saying that the mega link had an unlocked map...this does not appear to be the case. There was another user that said they had to use a code for that map as well...so it would seem it is locked.

I tried to go to 50.x again thinking maybe it would update to 5.x GPS, but it didn't. If anyone has the GPS 5.x software, i'd like to get that so I can update.

In the meantime, I found a legit old copy of jetmouse. I did generate a code for me, about to go try it.

One thing I noticed is that the firmware update reboots the system and you think you're done, but you aren't. The USB is still flashing away with the system just showing the clock, eventually it pops back up and continues to update things. Once I have this down and understood, I will do my best to post a comprehensive explanation of the steps. There is a bunch of great info in this thread, but it's a mix of newer radios older radios, links from 5 or more yrs ago that go to sites that don't exist any longer.

I have access to a safe, secure file sharing site we use to support our customers, as well as our own FTP site. I'm happy to post an organized set of firmware, GPS software, Maps, tools, etc that will always be accessible and safe if folks can provide the software I don't have already. What I have already:

Mygig 50.01.01
Mygig 33.01.23
GPS V7.11
2020.20 gmapprom.img (I believe this is locked, despite the poster saying it was unlocked)

Thanks,
Steve

I have the 50.00.07 and 33.02.01 Mygig, but I grabbed them the SOX mydrive that looks to be well-maintained. As for maps, the only one I have that I know is "good" is the 2020.20 I got from mega in this thread. The 2015.30 fails every time I try it, but I tried with yet another USB just now and this time it said it was the wrong map version - Alaska instead of North America (I downgraded to 33.x again before trying this). So maybe my drives just suck and the map isn't right. Hard to find good downloads anymore... I've had to torrent all the maps I've tried outside of the 2020.20.

I've seen some say you have to update your GPS software to 5 and 7 to install newer maps, and some say not to update above 3 if you have 3, so I don't know what the correct way is.

The 2014.20 map I downloaded was zipped and when I finally got it finished, it wasn't an img file, it was a bunch of other stuff with an installation file so I don't have that now to try either. If I could get a known good 2014.20 map at least I could see if my hardware is good, since that for sure doesn't need a gps update to install.

One thing for clarification, since you mentioned the GPS versions... if you see GPS 2.9 Text 3.00, that's GPS 3.00. The screen before that, where the "Software Versions, Detailed Maps, etc" selections are shows the "real" GPS software version at the top.

OK Breakthrough! I have been going back through the thread to see if I missed anything, and found a post saying to use 33.02.01, NOT 33.01.23 for maps newer than 2015. I installed 33.02.01, and for the first time since I started this, the 2020.20 map update is installing! I will update again when it finishes to confirm it completed successfully, but at this point it looks like that was the problem I was having.

I haven't read through all the posts here, but does this work for a 2017 430N version?

Are the high res files better than the stock files on a 2017 or does the newer 2017) version already have higher res files than the older 2011/2012 Jeeps?

Thanks,

Ahh, subscribed for future reference :)

2017 you can't install new junction files. You can only install the main map update, and only if you rename it to gmapsupp.img

OK so.... the update failed... kind of? It said PND updated successfully, but it also said the map was not updated successfully. When I look at the Detailed Map screen, it now has copyright dates from 2014 instead of 2010. In dev mode, the gmapprom.img file says it was last modified in 2009, and the JCV file is a different version than what was on my USB, so that didn't update. I don't know why the copyrights changed if the map files themselves didn't change though.

I will reformat my flash drive and try again on my way home from work in a few hours, hopefully it was just a blip.

It worked! So the full process for 2011 is pretty easy once you have the right version.

1) install 33.02.01 (NOT 33.01.23)
2) download map update and put on USB. (Garmin folder, gmapprom.IMG in that, also put JCV folder here, inside JCV put matching JCV file)
3) update map files with USB
4) update to 50.01.01 if wanted

That's it, shouldn't have to do anything else.
