I have a pair of large ammo can boxes I use to store tools, straps, etc.. That I would like to mount in the rear of my 2013 4 door. I've seen others where they drill through the pan and bolt them down. I'd rather not drill through the pan if I can figure out how to use an existing mount and there are two in the back that are candidates. One is the back bolt holding the seat in. The other is the tie down hook.
I'm planning on making a mount to hold the ammo can and bolt it in. I'm mainly mounting it so it's secure in the back and won't fly around while wheeling. I'd also like it secure when the top is off that someone can't grab it and walk. I've thought about a couple designs, but something along these lines is where I'm at...
Materials -
Sheet of aluminum 1 1/4 times the size of the bottom of the ammo box. Thinking about a 1/4 inch thick.
1-1 1/2 inch high aluminum angle bar a few feet long.
A couple bolts, wing nuts to attach ammo box to fabbed mount.
To fab - take aluminum angle bar and cut 45 degree triangles out of the bar and then bend closed the corners together so it makes a rectangle slightly larger than ammo box. Preferably snug to the box, so there are no rattles. I have someone that will weld aluminum for me cheap, so I'd have them tack the corners together. Then weld this frame to the aluminum plate with a couple inches extra extending to the back that can be bolted to one of the above mounts.
Then I'd drill holes in the bottom of box and plate and then bolt them up using the wing nuts so I can pop them out without tools.
So I'm looking for thoughts and advice. Is any of this stupid? Is there a better way? I have modest power tools like saws, grinders, etc. but no metal working tools like brakes.
One other note... I don't want to drill through the boxes. I thought about a band or large U-bolt type thing strapping it into mount, but that seems like more trouble than it's worth every time I want to open up the box. So if there is a better way to secure these, I'd love to hear it.
