Any suggestions for covering hard top & storing it in backyard?

So we have a 3 piece hard top on our jeep, and it also came with the soft top. Now that it's getting warm out, we want to put up the soft top for the summer. Now of course comes the hassle with figuring out what to do with the hard top; we were thinking about throwing a cover over it and storing it in the backyard. Now, there is a specific cover made for this 3 piece hard top, but it goes for $180 after shipping costs.
I was wondering if you guys have any experience with this, and if you recommend a cheaper alternative, like if throwing any old tarp/car cover on there would suffice, etc..
thanks.

I have a tendency to build a custom little "shed" for everything I keep outdoors. This is a function of having the space and living in the rainforest where anything exposed or on the ground is going to rot or grow moss.

But a few 2x4s and a little plywood or OSB is very cheap and goes a long way. I built my grill shed last year with all scraps from other projects including wood, tar paper, shingles, and stain. The only things I bought were the hardware and some cheap cedar fencing for the door slats. If I was storing my hardtop outside, I'd make a similar, custom-sized lean-to style "shed" with no doors.

I made the storage dolly with the online directions, wrapped the top in movers blankets, covered with a large tarp, and then fitted a large Napolean BBQ cover over it. Looks good and is protected and weather proofed.

Bestop makes an AWESOME cover. Its a little pricey but covers your top like a sleeping bag. Mine has been in storage for 3 months in the back yard and not a bug in it. I did cover the cover with a tarp because it wasn't cheap. Highly recommend it!

I left mine over the grass in the backyard on 4 inches height blocks the first year.

Well when I came to switch the tops back in October the inside of the hard top had mold on it that only came off with high pressure washer. So make sure it sits higher than 4 inches, that there is plenty of air around it (so myself I would not cover it with a tarp).

Also you'll see spiders coming out from the wiper motor for about a month :lmao:

Since then I moved, now have a garage and it's hanging on a hoist.
