Backup cameras: Looking for recommendations

Hi all, I've looked thru a ton of threads on the subject but can't seem to find what I'm looking for. I have the radio 430 with the Alpine speakers and sub woofer (I removed) in my 2018 JKU..The menu on the touch screen has no camera input, does this mean it can't be used with a backup camera or do I need it programmed? Looking at spare tire mount cameras at the moment, but can't see paying over 100-150 for one..
Thanks, sorry if this has been asked before.. cheers

You need to activate the option in the radio.
I just did one for my son, and used Jscan.
It's an amazing app.
I paid 20 bucks for the app, and 32 bucks for the bluetooth adapter(you can get them cheaper).
The dealers charge between 75 and 100 bucks to activate, or, some kits can be purchased with a programmer that plugs into your obd port to activate.
The Jscan is definitely the way to go. You can change tire size, gear ratio, transfer case ratio, and on and on.
It's a cool app, check it out here

The kits are anywhere's from 100 bucks on up to the 300 dollar range with the programmer, that is vin locked. Obdgenie makes most of them, and sell for around 100 bucks, the companies that sell the kits get around 200 bucks for them. Jscan is definitely the way to go for activation.

You can assemble the parts yourself using Amazon/Ebay and a few other sources. If your looking for a spare tire mount, the main thing is getting a good mount that will clear your spare. Some show the bottom of your spare in the view.
You can also go license plate mount, or drill a hole in the bumper and mount one there.

Here's a few companies that sell the kits, click them:

I installed this one from Amazon for 80 bucks which includes a decent camera and all the wiring. Image is crystal clear and I'm satisfied even in very low light. It works great assuming you have stock wheels or at least wheels that have spaces. I'm now running JL Rubicon wheels and it lined up perfectly to give a good view. Having a backup camera is really nice with my JKU when using the hardtop cause you can't see for crap with the inside mirror.

I did my back up camera over four years ago, if I remember correctly:

$50.- for dealer flash (shop around, most dealers want to charge 1 hr labor but it's literally 10-15 minutes, so I found a shop that agreed to 1/2 hour of labor).

$25.- for some kind of plug/adapter that goes in the back of the radio to which the video camera connects
$~25 amazon camera
$0.- for homemade bracket that connect to my hitch
--------------------------------------------------
$100 total

if you search for back up camera in this forum you will find a ton of information

Just to comment on the actual camera itself. I've had the pioneer ND-BC8 and a couple of cheaper ones from Amazon. The Pioneer was definitely better quality I should have replaced my damaged one (user error, not the cameras fault) with the same one on the back and the front.

Far as I'm concerned JKU's should have had a backup camera STANDARD for a long time. It's for sure a safety issue because you really can't see much of anything with the hardtop on imo. Last thing anyone needs to do is run over someone that's crossing behind your jeep!

My recommendation is have someone give you hand when you mount the spare back on after the camera is mounted. It's easy to damage the camera or bend the mount as you lift it while trying to secure the tire.

There's several threads on options on how you might want to power the camera. My camera is run to a Kenwood head unit so it's probably a little different then going to the factory unit? Fortunately there's plenty of video's on the best way to run the wires, etc.

Yes I saw that so hook up should be cake. The picture quality is excellent and very happy with it. I much prefer the mount up high between the spare tire spokes as opposed to a bumper or license plate frame mount. You get a better field of vision with it up higher and the lens tends to stay a little cleaner.

yes. I believe everyone is right on the dealer flash.

There are 3 main backup camera manufactures and they all basically come from the same place I am told.

However if you buy the cheaper quality cameras (wherever they are manufactured). You could possibly get lower quality wiring, which may not be an issue. However the low quality wiring in my experience breaks as it is very thin even when installing breaks also this could lead to corrosion in the wiring from rain on the outside if it is not protected correctly.

Knowing all of this I bought a cheap backup camera for my unit and it works just as same as the expensive ones as I have one of those in my other cars. I just had to redo the wiring so it does not break in the future.

I have mine wired into my OEM 430N, but did not take power from the acc outlet, as i did not want it powered on all the time the jeep is running.
I taped into the reverse light circuit in the rear of the tub.
You can definitely find anything you need on Amazon, or ebay to make it work/look any way you like.
