IMHO, any "best" exhaust would be made from 304 stainless steel.

Also, IMHO, you aren't going to make your inline 6 sound like a throaty high-HP V8. Mostly, it might sound like a loud sewing machine.

HaHa. However, years ago I drove my CJ-7 with the 258 in to the muffler shop with an open header, and it was AWESOME!

 

I put on a banks cat back on my TJ this past summer.
It has a nice sound without being obnoxious.

The price point was fantastic.

I have used Aero Chamber mufflers on 9000 rpm 2L 4 cyl. engine's to supercharged V8's and this is my go to muffler for a good deep sound. If I need to tone it down I have a race muffler that doesn't change the tone of the muffler but it does take 5 or 6 db off of the loudness of the muffler if it needs to be a little quieter.

IMO the best exhaust "system" for the TJ is the stock OEM one. If you want a different louder sound put a Flowmaster muffler on it.

 

Congrats on your Jeep. I'm sure you're now discovering you bought a TJ and they have their whole section on this forum. This is the JK section. That 4.0 you have is arguably the best engine Jeep ever used.

I ran the Borla system on one of my 4.0’s. Honestly wasn’t worth the money.

 

Last year I installed a Banks Monster cat back on both my brothers 2004 Sport and my 2005 Rubicon. Very easy to install, nice tone and stainless steel. Price is good as well. We both are happy with the results..

 

I'm running a Thrush welded muffler on my 06 with the pipe from the muffler to the rear removed. I cut about 8" of the end of the pipe off and added the cut off piece to the outlet of the muffler pointed down and out about 45 degrees. sounds pretty good, you can hear it but it's not obnoxious.
