Best Fire Extinguisher and mounting.

Hey guys, I've been doing research on different types and kinds of fire extinguishers and the best mounts for them. I've got enough electrical and other mods on my Jeep that it's about time I get one. So, what is everyone running for and extinguisher and where are you guys mounting them?

I run both a 2.5lb class c fire extinguisher that will put out pretty much everything car related along with my element extinguisher . The element goes right below my drivers seat for faster access but since it's not as big and I dont think would last as long I like to also keep my h3r 2.5lb on the roll bar. I have enough self installed electrics that I don't really want to take a chance so I carry both but either should be good for what you're looking for.

I have the Drake Off Road quick release fire extinguisher with the underseat mount in mine. And the fire extinguisher I have in it is a clean agent, not the chemical kind that leaves the powdery, dusty residue all over.

This just a pic of it off the internet, not my actual Jeep.

I've seen many references to the Element fire extinguisher, but I remain skeptical of them, as the website's explanation of how they supposedly function chemically is nothing but pseudo-scientific gibberish (I should maybe mention here that I am a chemist by training and profession).

Perhaps the Element fire extinguishers do in fact work well, but if the manufacturer cannot even provide a meaningful and scientifically factual explanation of how they function, particularly in regards to their supposed non-residue fire suppression, I cannot put much trust in them.

In my own Jeep, I carry a 2.5 lb Halotron fire extinguisher. I've seen too much electrical equipment completely ruined by the use of dry chemical fire extinguishers to be willing to have one in my vehicle (or in my home --- I have only CO2 extinguishers only in the latter).

Halotron is the current replacement for halon, but it is only about 1/4 as effective as halon in extinguishing fires, pound for pound.

Halon fire extinguishers can still be had --- a local shop in Anchorage has the 2 1/2 lb ones for $400, and the 5 lb ones for $650. I went with the 2 1/2 lb halotron, for about $150. Halon is no longer manufactured, but there is still a stock of it around. It is the preferred fire extinguisher for general aviation use.

This product really interest me. I can't find where I first saw it; but a fellow Jeeper had one secured on the underside of his hood for engine fires. I want to do this because I feel that when I added the full PSC steering assist kit I increased my chances of engine fire significantly. The large PS fluid reservoir is attached to the battery tray right above my exposed Ripp Headers. I think it is a bad idea to have large amounts of PS fluid above headers and right next to battery. I am try to also fab up some kind of fluid shield above the headers.

5 lb i have. only had one trail fire. jeep behind me. caught my eye i said Tom you are on fire on the CB. they put it out with a 2.5 but it was empty as well. I had the 5 lb ready. Was just a HP oil line off the orbital valve, loose it misted hot oil on his Ls no damage really. But we go to it fast. Like i was watching it go up a fall in my rear view when i seen the black smoke is fire. Fixed and rolled the rest of the day...

one time i contemplated setting mine on fire, lol...

needed a welder more times then the 5 pound....That I have now.

the element fire extinguishers work, but do require you to get closer to the fire. A 2.5/5 pound fire extinguisher will do a better job with less drama imo. I wouldn’t rely only on an element. I carry an element and a 2.5 fire extinguisher

If you are interested on having a passive fire extinguisher in the engine bay I would recommend BlazeCut. I'll be honest and say I don't remember which size I got, the T300 or the T400. Whichever it was to big. Because of the mods I am in the process of completing it will be time to rethink it. Maybe a couple of T-050 or the T-100.

As for a portable fire extinguisher hard to beat H3R Performance HalGuard. I have it in the rear using a Bartact mount.

I also run a Drake bracket in front of the drivers seat.

Yes, it takes up some leg space. The trade off is worth it if you have to reach it when hanging in your seatbelt because something happened and you are either on your side or on your roof.

Yes, as I was hanging there waiting for friends to get to the Jeep and help, I thought "oh sh!t, if this thing catches fire, I'm screwed" because my fire extinguisher was then strapped to the roll bar.

Never again will I go wheeling without my fire extinguisher within reach.

So... what I'm gathering from this thread is that I should replace my $60 dry chemical fire extinguisher with a $300 halotron extinguisher, and use the $60 extinguisher only when I'm called upon to save somebody else's vehicle (because they don't have an extinguisher at all) and reserve the $300 halotron exclusively for my Jeep. ✔

That would be my suggestion, jkrispies.

(Although a halotron fire extinguisher shouldn't cost you $300, unless you are going for the 5 lb. version, which is going to be pretty bulky.)

The Element fire extinguisher sounds like another, or an additional, option as well, even if you apparently do have to get pretty darn close in to the fire with it for it to be effective.

Jkrispies, I did buy my halotron fire extinguisher two or three years ago (well before getting my Jeep), so it may be that they have gone up in price noticeably since then. Like nothing else hasn't, eh?

And I am with you on being annoyed by all the "expert" advice on dry chemical fire extinguishers, wherein they will NEVER discuss or reveal the absolute destruction of electronics exposed to the plume from those kinds of fire extinguishers --- especially in a relatively small and enclosed space such as an engine compartment. With all the electronics in a modern vehicle, I seriously believe that you would do just as well to let your vehicle go up in flames as to use a dry chemical fire extinguisher anywhere on or near its engine.

I hear you about the Mojave Desert sun and heat, also. I was working down there for a six month stint back in 2021, and it eventually became brutal --- I went to working a midnight shift (this was mostly outdoor work) just to avoid the worst of it.

Just bought the Element. :)

One time I was camping at the Colorado River in July or August. My back started bothering me, and so I went to my truck where I had a bottle of gelcap Advil in the glove compartment, specifically for that purpose. Bear in mind that the glove compartment is the one part of the vehicle that is relatively insulated against extreme temperatures. I opened up the bottle, and there was just a blob sitting at the bottom, lol. One of the lessons that we learn (sometimes the hard way) is that if you've got a pressurized can of anything (spray paint, pepper spray, Fabreze, etc.) is to never leave it exposed to direct sunlight while in your vehicle and ideally keep it in a bag or something that will contain it if decides to explode. One of the other reasons I went with the Amerex fire extinguisher is that I read a couple reviews from folks who live in the desert, and they said that they'd never had a problem with them withstanding car heat after storing it in their vehicle over the course of several years.

I run with a H3R mounted behind the driver's seat. I get the concept about sensitive electronics, but frankly scarlet, I don't give a damn. The fire extinguisher exists only to beat back the flames enough to extract the people. I don't give a rat's A$@ about your electronics.

I'm late but I thought I'd update this thread! Finally caught the fire extinguisher I wanted on sale, went from $340 to $199, a 5lb Halotron Amerex one. Here's the link for the curious.

Also ordered a Bartact roll bar mount for it, which should mount nicely in the rear.
