I know some folks have their gripes here about the BFG Mud Terrain KM's, but they came stock on my 09 Unlimited X. I was so pleased (and surprised) to get over 75K miles off that first stock set...that I went ahead and got them again. Not that I trail ride or run through mud that often, but getting to and around hunting camp during season is a lot easier with them (and of course that random situation where you're very thankful to have them). I also don't mind the road noise (Trektop with the back off 9 months out of the year isn't exactly "quiet" :bop: )

The second set didn't last as long, which was 100% my fault bc I failed to rotate them as often as they needed (I used to live around the corner from a tire shop that would rotate them for $5 with a military ID). I ended up moving on the other side of town and it just became a little bit of a hassle without any nearby shops. Needless to say, I learned my lesson with mud-terrains...as the second set lasted between around 50K.

Now I'm on my third set with about 60K-65K miles on them (probably 10k left)...so I was starting to shop around. Whenever I get close to needing a set of tires, I learned to buy a tire or two a month, so the expense doesn't sting all at once. When I went to do that yesterday and today, most of the tire sellers online are either out of stock or have a very limited stock on the tire. Also, I used to be able to find them online for around $190/tire shipped...but now the cheapest is around $230 if a supplier does have them.

Does anyone know if they're being discontinued? Or if it's just because they had to ramp up production of another tire, and they're just short on supply for a little bit? I searched the forum and ran a few google searches, but didn't find anything (it became very convoluted with all the related model names - KM2, KM3, KO2, etc..). Thanks!

AFAIK they were only being made in one size for JK Rubicons. Now that Jeep no longer makes JK they shut down the line. It was strange for a tire company to offer three generations of the same tire simultaneously.

Ah, I did come across something like that on a thread, but it seemed like it wasn't definitive and still in the rumor mill. But totally makes sense - reminds of of Meet the Parents..."Ok, well don't you think that the Samsonite people, in some crazy scheme in order to make a profit, MADE MORE THAN ONE BLACK SUITCASE?" lol

So I guess now I just have to decide on trying to find the KM's wherever...or go ahead with the KM2 or KM3...possibly even the GY MT/R's. There's plenty of info on those last 3 I can research :)

I was surprised too! The service tech turned the screen around to show me “Discontinued” right across the image of the KM3 tires. They just came out last year. I was planning on getting 5 in the stock Rubicon size.
I love the KM on the trail. They grip EVERYTHING, so I wanted to try the KM3.

I emailed the sales dept at Tire Rack about the original KM's and got this response:

Me:
I have a question about the BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM tires.

I've been shopping around for a set, and it seems that most wholesalers/retailers are out of these tires, or have a limited quantity. Is BFGoodrich discontinuing the tire, or are they just having a supply slow-down?

Brad from Tire Rack:
Thanks for your inquiry. These particular tires have been discounted and we only have 1 left.

If you are looking for a good AT on road/off road tire these would be a good selection.

So yeah, in the words of the great Spaulding from Caddyshack....Double Farts!!

He wrote "discounted"...but sounds like he meant "discontinued"

I am surprised it took this long. How good were they really if only made in one size? Hated mine on my 08 Rubicon, and like noted they wear like iron so it was forever before I could replace them. They were on the Rubicon and Willys though, not just the Rubicon.
The km2's were awesome, get them instead, or try the km3. Those can't be discontinued.
If I didnt do nearly 30k a year I would have gone with km2 on my 12 Sahara, but for this set I went with ko2. We will see how my travel has changed when these wear out. If lol.

Well, I guess it's DuraTracs for me when my KMs wear out.

One less choice to ponder, lol.

I’m kinda old school with an “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” mindset towards tires. I love the original KM’s and have been extremely happy with their performance so far. Unfortunately, tires are expensive items to test and see how they perform. Sure, most manufacturers have a limited/pro-rated warranty against defects and faster than typical wear...but I doubt they have like a 30-day satisfaction or money-back guarantee, right? Maybe it’s up to the shop for that. I haven’t really looked into it, but seems like it’d be a hassle to try and claim. I can just see it. “Sir, you were supposed to rotate your tires every 5k miles, and we’re showing 5,105 in between one of your rotations. Sorry, but we can not fulfill the warranty.”

But just like the KMs (or any other tire for that matter), the KM2 and KM3 have their negative reviews and horror stories. I’m sure they’re both a fine tire and many people love them, but I just know the KM well and it’s worked perfectly for me 🙂.

I’m a fan of the KM2’s as well. I read all the time on the forums about how bad they are in snow and they’re too loud on the road. I keep mine on all year and find them an excellent compromise. They churn through deep San Juan mountain snow with no problem and handle on road driving very well, as long as you rotate regularly. Ice, not so much. All in all an excellent tire that really shines off road. I’ll go KM3 when my KM2’s are finished.

If KM3’s are discontinued, someone forgot to tell BFGoodrich as they have an entire website, advertising campaign, etc dedicated to this tire.

Try TireBuyer or Tire Rack just to see about your particular size in the KM3. Some sizes are special order but the KM3 is out there and available.

Most mud tires are quiet for the first 10K. Its after those first 10K when you see the true colors. I had to get rid of the KMs on my Rubicon after 33K because they were driving me nuts. Too many compromises for the excellent mud traction they provide. I also think there is a effect similar to when someone throws on a K&N filter and then says they can feel the horsepower. An old filthy paper filter is going to do worse than a brand new clean K&N so it gives you the perception of power, much in the same way a new set of KM3s will seem much quieter than the KMs they replaced with 45K miles on them.

My KM2 35s were very noisy at 5K miles. So far at 2.5K the KM3s have not gotten any louder.
