Cheap headliner kit on Amazon ...

Love my 2008 JK but really felt the wrath of the sun last summer. Decided to go with some kind of headliner and spent some time researching the options. Should I DIY or do BoomMat or go with Rugged Ridge or Mopar? What about Bedrug? Did a lot of reading here and other places and all have their defenders and all have their detractors. The primary complaint seems to be that the glue lets go and then the headliner falls off the ceiling. What to do?

Then I encountered this on Amazon:

CHEAP HEADLINER - $75.99

That seemed too good to be true. Since all the other commercial options run over $200 this is quite a savings. Even a DIY option would easily get to $75 in materials and then I need to cut it out, etc. So ... esp since the Zon is good with refunding if stuff isn't good I ordered it. Here's a quick review:

* the material is thin. Black fabric with a "nap" to it and foam sewn between layers. Looks nice. Seams are taped and sewn. However, workmanship not A+. Pieces are a little erratic in places. If you are looking for something that is a perfect factory fit this is not your headliner. This is your headliner if you are in the "good enough and I saved a lot of money" category.

* comes with a ton of velcro strips that have a sticky backing. You stick them on the back of the headliner pieces and then peel the backing off and up it goes. The seams all have velcro sewn on them. Easy!

* they look great. They just look great. Who looks carefully at the ceiling anyway?

* And they ARE STAYING UP. The two pieces on the freedom panels have been up two weeks in the searing Texas heat and they have not fallen off (of course, they'll fall tomorrow!). Full disclosure: I park in the garage and under a carport shade at work so the Jeep hasn't been out in the sun all day long like it would be if you had to leave it in a parking lot all day while at work. However, it's been outside plenty and it has gotten plenty hot and they stay up. I'm pleased.

* I think a lot of the success with them staying up is because the wife cleaned the tops very thoroughly with Windex and rubbing alcohol. That's huge for making them stick and stay stick.

I also got a ten pound barbell weight and used it to just crush the headliner onto the ceiling as hard as I can push it. I went over every adhesive strip HARD. They are UP THERE. Hope they are gonna stay put!

* And they MAKE A HUGE DIFFERENCE. That's the big question people have about these headliners. Well, we put the freedom panels up one day and didn't get the rest up for two weeks. So as I went down the road (on a 104 degree day in Dallas) I could put my hand on the black headliner panels and then reach behind me and feel the un-headlinered panels back over the rear seat. WOW. One day you could hardly touch the ceiling it was so hot but the roof over me as I was driving was not hot at all! I couldn't believe it. And while we did some temperature gun checks mostly the temp difference on the gun wasn't as big as I would have thought (and that may cause you to think "I don't need this") but it's not the surface temp so much as the heat the ceiling RADIATES. It's like an oven without the headliner - just a warm layer of hot air on the roof. I am so pleased with these headliners. THEY MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

* Bonus: I've always had issues with a reflection in my rear view mirror because the ceiling was white. Guess what happens when you put a black headliner up? Suddenly the rear view mirror becomes sharp and clear! YES!

All in all, I'm really really pleased with this headliner kit. Cheap and it works! Yes, the adhesive may let go but if it does I'll just go to Home Depot or Lowe's and buy some spray-on glue and stick it back up. It works and it works very well. Obviously I can't directly compare it to other products (which may work even better) but for the money I am well pleased. I don't think you'll be disappointed with these headliners - they aren't fancy or perfect but they leave a lot of money in your pocket!

I will update as things go along but so far so good!

What most here have found to be true... if they are cheap, they fail far faster than not so cheap, no matter the aftermarket product. Not always, but far more often than not.

I have HotHead and they have stood the test of time here at 3200' elevation in the Texas heat and cold. 106°F 3 days last week and 4 days of single digit lows last February. The key is using a 200 or 400 grit sandpaper to scuff the material and then use alcohol to ensure it is a clean surface before applying the units. HotHead are slightly thicker material but not heavy and are DOG HAIR RESISTANT which was important for me. My Great Dane/Bull Mastiff touches the roof often and I ahve never had hair embedded in any panel. Plus I prefer to support US made products.

We appreciate your support!
We have a couple dogs, too (Kiley & Sasha). They love coming on rides with us.

USStrongman wrote "And not to beat you up, but man, those seams are crooked and puckered. Both on the edges and down the middle of each panel."

you are correct. which is why I noted "Pieces are a little erratic in places. If you are looking for something that is a perfect factory fit this is not your headliner. This is your headliner if you are in the "good enough and I saved a lot of money" category." mine actually came in pretty good shape but again - they aren't perfect.

as for failing because they are cheap - how does a headliner "fail?" I would think what fails is the adhesive holding it up. I don't think anybody will see the actual headliner fall apart or dissolve. the trouble is the glue/velcro/adhesive strips let go. and that may happen with this cheap headliner kit. hasn't yet but it sure may.

I was speaking generically - lights, bumpers, powder coating.... the list goes on and on of stuff people ahve bought here that have not stood the test of time.

In regard to this - fading, adhesive not working well with the material its made out of, sagging in the heat, contracting in the cold and pulling away from the adhesive? If youre happy, who cares.

I did and I do. I bought EAG sliders becasue they fit my need better than anything else. The price point was 250% less than the other slider/step I considered. My Mother in law has MS and walks with a walker. She loves riding in my JKU and needs a large purchase for her foot to step on. I take her shopping, to the pharmacy, doctors appts, etc. The EAG fit my need:

Tucks up to the pinch seam and hides it like Rubi rails
Wide step for her to use
A friend has them on his JK and the powder coating has stood up to 2 years of abuse and Texas sun.

Sometimes you have to do what's right, and not what you'd prefer to do. Oh, and by the way, I have a Smittybilt tire carrier. American company, Chinese (I believe) manufactured. Don't worry. Biden will bring in even more cheap Chinese stuff for everyone to buy.

Interesting. I went with Mopar just because the kit included the side windows and I liked how their foam seemed more dense than competitors. I researched the heck out of Boom Mat, Mopar, Hothead and couldn't really find one that was above and beyond superior than others. Was looking for head-head measurements of heat reduction, sound, etc. It would really almost take a few Jeepers with the different products installed leaving their out in the sun/cold over the same amount of time then getting measurements, but that isn't available. HotHead has great customer service from what I hear and you are helping small business. Mopar is Mopar. The Boom Mats looks like what is installed in music studios, so may be great for noise. Overall I think those 3 would be fine. Anything cheaper may be great too, would be wary of adhesive wearing out early, measurements being off or something. But hey, only we see it inside so who cares!

We're glad to hear that you have heard great things about our customer service! We are a small business and customer service is something we pride ourselves on.

All of the headliner options will work to an extent in regards to sound deadening and insulation. We made a Headliner Comparison Video a while back that compares some of the various Jeep Headliner options available, including our Hothead Headliners, Mopar Headliners and Boom Mat Headliners. We didn't go into much depth, we simply just wanted to show each headliner up close so the viewer can see what materials they are made of, how they're made and what they look like. We have since made several improvements to our Headliners. The addition of a Radiant Barrier layer for further insulation properties is something you can notice that has changed if you're looking at our newer product photos.

If you search YouTube or reviews on our site, you can find some pretty detailed reviews with folks using temperature guns and decibel (dB) meters that get a lot more detailed.

I went with the HH and instructions, quality, install, was fantastic. I opted for the sound strips, don't know if it is necessary but i am thrilled with the noise reduction, stereo sound, and look. I will add the rear window surrounds eventually. Yes, the price is a bit more than some of the competition but i felt it was worth it and the communication from HH prior to my purchase was second to none and I believe the same would be true if I had any more questions or any issues.
