I have a 2006 6 cylinder which I have had for about four months. When I got it the oil level read high on the dip stick and it was not due for an oil change for 3K miles. You would think that being that close to a change it would have read a little low on the stick. I thought maybe the seller had put a lot of additives in it to solve some problem. I had the oil changed and it still reads high, right were it was before the change. Let it set over night checked it again same thing. The stick is not bent and sets all the way down as it should. I have never had a car that read high on the stick. Any ideas

How much over the high mark? Assume you added the correct amount of oil for your application. Any evidence of an aftermarket pan? Have you verified you have the correct dip stick?

Assuming you're parked on level ground and checking the level properly, it's possible the original owner changed the dipstick, and the wrong stick is in there. It could be overfilled, especially if a quick lube place got their hands on it. If it were mine I'd either borrow a dipstick from a friend and check to rule out the wrong dipstick. Or change the oil and filter and let it drain a few hours, fill it with the proper amount of oil, take a ride let it sit overnight and check the level in the morning. If it's still wrong, scribe a mark in the dipstick and use that for your new full mark. Then measure the distance from the original full mark to the 1 quart low mark, then measure down that distance from your new full mark, scribe another line and that's your new safe zone. I've done that once or twice over the years with used cars purchased, sometimes for whatever reason a dipstick got replaced or the dipstick tube was out of wack and not leaking. It was a no cost fix.
