Do I Need to get Transmission Control Module (TCM) Flashed?

Good Morning,

Last week I had my Check Engine light pop up so I ran the codes and got the codes:
P0605 Internal Controller Malfunction - Trans
P0605 Internal Control Module Rom Malfunction CONFIRMED

I did some research and found that this was probably due to a bad TCM. I took the jeep to a local, very trustworthy car shop and they confirmed that the TCM was bad and needed to be replaced.

So I found a TCM at a salvage yard. My question is: If I get a TCM from the same year/make/model as my jeep (2004 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited), do I still need to take the TCM to the dealership and have it flashed, or can I just plug & play?

Thanks to anyone that can help

I went through the same thing a couple months ago. Same code, Jeep in limp mode. I went the salvaged TCM route also, before I emptied another pocket.
Plug and play. So far so good.

03-04 TJs have the TCM separate from the 3 port PCM.
05-06 TJs the TCM is incorporated in a 4 port PCM.
If you look at an 05-06 manual TJ, that 4th port will be empty.

Update

Just wanted to update this with my personal experience, in case anyone else is having the same issue:

I got a lot of mixed answers from a variety of individuals about the issue, so I'll tell you what I did.

I went online and ordered a salvaged TCM for a 2004 TJ from Davey's Jeeps. They couldn't have been more helpful when I called, very nice people. Total cost was $35 ($20 for the part and $15 for shipping). I got the TCM about 4 days later (they're in Ohio and I'm in MD if that helps).

I took the old TCM out of my Jeep and plugged in the one that I got and immediately the Check Engine light went off. I took the jeep for a spin and it was perfectly fine. It's been about 5 months and it's perfectly fine, so I am very happy to say that I didn't have to spend an arm and a leg to fix it.

I talked with a couple of older mechanics who said that as long as the TCM is from the same year/make/model then there should be no issue with just plugging and going, and so far I haven't had any problems.

thanks again for the help.
