Anyone with a dog and a two door where do you put your dog? Tried putting her in the trunk space with the seat pushed up but I'm afraid it will roll back on her. Then tried to get her in the back seat but she really couldn't get in it Any advice?

What trench cover did you get?

To the OP, I've got 2 black lab mixes. I took my rear seat out, and put a Weathertech liner meant for a 4 door in.

I leave the liner in all the time, and when the dogs are going to be riding in the back I just toss a blanket back there, more to catch the hair than anything else. At first I loaded them in through the rear gate, but for my last trip I had a hitch mount rack on, so I tried letting them get in on the passenger side and they just hopped right in. I'm now re-thinking my plan for netting to keep them in with the roof off; I was planning on setting it up with cargo on one side and dogs on the other, now I'm considering cargo in the back, dogs in the "middle" (that way I can get at the cargo by opening the rear.)

My Border Collie (about 40 lbs) jumps directly in the back seat when we go anywhere. I could see this as a problem for bigger dogs though. I keep a couple bungee cords and wrap them around the back seat and hook them onto the frame of the front seats when it's folded forward. This allows for the seat to be in, but out of the way and not rolling back. This comes in useful when my buddy brings his dog too.

X2 all of the above. It depends on the situation:

  • Wheeling- seat in OR forward and bungeed. (Depends on if I have one dog or two that day). I've found the rear compartment, seat out, is too MUCH room. The dogs get knocked around too much on the rocks.
  • IF I am just driving around town for fun I do take the seat out when I have both dogs.
  • I use a body pillow in the space behind the front seats. I'd looked at more expensive options but on a lark I threw the pillow in. My dog spent 8 hours on a rocky trail last weekend in the back seat- between the body pillow, seat in and a car hammock cover she was snug as a bug in a rug. She actually slept thru some of the trail. It is difficult to get her in and out- but she was very secure this way.
I always strap a short leash onto a set of oh-shit handles that go between the sound bar. The dogs wear harnesses. It only took one time when my dog jumped out, attached to the sound bar, on a choke collar- for me to dump the standard collar attachment.

Took my seat right out and got a 4dr cargo liner. It's honestly perfect. I just had my dog and my buddies dog back there on a fishing trip. Both had their space and their own side to look out of. After the day, they both slept comfortably back there with plenty room for our gear. Cargo liner keeps everything dry. I fill the rear cup holders with water for the dog to drink from. It's a good set up for me.

This is exactly what I did. I never use the back seat, and the Jeep 4-door cargo mat fits perfect in the 2-door without the seat, and keeps the back nice and clean when the doge has muddy paws.

Took the back seats out. Put a huge dog bed down. And got the safari dog net so she can't come up front. Was adorable when our 70lbs 8month old GSD would stand on the center consol but got tired of her falling over on us and on the shifter. Soon to make a former fitting piece of plywood flush with the back to cover the foot wells behind the seats. If you want pics check my build thread out.

My back seat is out all the time and I have a large Rubbermade container in the back with a pillow on it for our dog. It's just about the same height as the console lid. She can lay there with her front paws on the console and be right there with us.

When we had a LJ, our Border Collie just jumped in the front seat and moved to the back seat. We never tethered her and we were involved in an accident where the Jeep flipped, tore off the hardtop. We were airlifted out, the dog walked away! She's still riding but now we have a JKU.

I wish I could find a way to get our 70lb Retriever/Sheepdog mix to climb in up front and jump in the back. There's more than enough room for her to do it she just won't. She has no problem jumping in and out of the back when we take the rear seat out or flip it up, but it's a pain to do and we have keep the back seat in for our 9 year old.

Sammy's 1st ride was today. He is a dane rescue and 6 months old. He had no trouble entering. He rode the front seat and did a great job. If he stays sitting, he fits the seat pretty well, standing is another story. We will have to look at other options up to and including small livestock trailer if necessary for future use.

I just take her leash and loop it through the bottom bar of the seat then wrap the other end around the passenger headrest. It's never come down so far.

The girlfriends 5 month olf Bullmastiff sits in the back seat just fine. He isnt full grown yet by any means. At 60 pounds he is still less than have the size he will be. However he doesnt like car rides, basically climbs up calmly into the back seat, lays his head down and waits for the ordeal of being in the hell machine to be over. Even when he gets full grown, I'm sure he could ride in the jeep with it naked and we wouldnt have to worry about him jumping out. As an added bonus, I would say that having a 150 pound brindle Mastiff sitting in the jeep makes a pretty good theft deterrent if you want to run into a store for a couple of minutes
