Expected Duratrac Tire Wear - Opinions Please..

Hi All,

I am running Goodyear Wrangler Duratracs LT315/70R17's on my 2015 Wrangler JK Unlimited. I am in Arizona and travel on the road 99.9% of the time. I only have 20,000 miles on these tires and have less than a 1/3 depth remaining. It's shocking really. If it matters, I have a mopar 3.5" lift kit on it since new.

I do not believe I have any alignment issues as this would most likely show up in the treadwear pattern. I have seen slightly more center wear than opposed to even wear across the face of the tire which leads me to think slight over pressure operation. However I am running these at between 36-40psi.

What should be the expected treadwear under these conditions? By the time I hit 30k miles, they will be near bald. As well, what seems to be the optimum tire pressure to run while on the road?

Opinions please...

I'm throwing those tires on mine in 3 weeks. Doesn't sound right. My brother got 50,000 miles out of his. To be honest, I'm just trying them out for something different. I heard they are really quiet and have great road manners. I ONLY run BFG's normally and got almost 100K on a set that is still on my 4runner. This is disheartening but doesn't sound right at all.

Also in AZ. Have duratracs on my stock JKUR. Am at 40k miles. Bought the jeep 20k miles ago with the duratracs on it. They are holding up very nicely. Have only worn a little.

I'm a technician and have found that most people don't realize how much changing the ride height, lowering or raising, has on suspension geometry. I'm not just talking about alignment, what I mean is how the vehicle's dynamics change through different center of gravity and angle of control arms in relation to steering axis angles and how that affects things like tire wear and ball joint life and wheel bearing loads. Wider wheels and tires play into these as well. These effects can be subtle but show up in strange ways. They can be hard to predict. So it always makes me laugh when people question why their vehicle failed in some way after they modified it. Adding 50 lbs per corner in un-sprung weight on a vehicle that gets driven only on the road seems like a waste of money.

I have a set that are nearing the end of their life in the next few months maybe. I am hoping to get until early summer before getting new ones. Mine are 33's on 15 inch rims. I had them on my YJ until I got my JKU last year. I have right at 80,000 mile on mine. They have been the greatest tire I have ever had... Quiet and a perfect ride. I am going to 35's when I get new tires. Unfortunately, they don't make 35's for 15 inch rims. So I think its STT Pros this time around. But the duratrac's are amazing!!

Same here on 15"rims. We run the stt Pros (35") on my wife's jeep and the DTs (33s) on mine. She has about 32 K on her STTs. They will not last quit as long as the DTs but they are a great tire as well. I'm guessing somewhere around 45K and the Pros will need to be changed out with the next set.

Suggest looking at your tire pressure first (center wear) and practice rotating at each oil change, Not an engineer but what helps make the DT a better M/S tire is the softer compounds of the rubber and maybe the high heat in your part of the country along with tire pressure could have an effect. I have 20K on mine just for winter and over 40K on the DT's for the F150, they are both GTG.

Had 56 K on first set, bought same set to replace them. 28-29 PSI is what I have ran them at from day one. Actually still had usable tread left at 56K. Changed them because they were three years old and my wife and I go way out in no mans land and usually solo. 36-40 PSI is way too much air for these tires on a JKU. Chalk test them and take the guess work out, and also 5 tire rotation every 4-5 K miles.

I'm on my second set of 315 duratracs, I drive almost 100 miles a day all interstate, I don't remember the exact millage but I got waay more than 20k out of my first set. I agree with everyone else sounds like way too much tire pressure might have cost you this set. I run 30-32 in my 4dr and ran 28-30 in my 2dr.

I had 285 70 17 on a 2 inch lift and drive like you I think. Mostly roads. I had over 100,000 on mine (just sold the jeep) Still has 10,000 more to go. They look great. Little bit louder than when they started and little slippery in the rain Not too bad. I rotated every 5,000 miles with out fail. I also get front end alignment checked every year. Free if they don't have to do anything.

I will go back to duratracs when my ko2 (only 1000 on them) Go out. Unless these are as good as the duratracs.
