Gas smell inside truck after filling up?

I've noticed that since I bought my TJ, every time I fill up with gas, there is a very strong gas smell in the cabin. This usually last for 100 miles or so and the smell goes away when I turn off the truck. Any idea what's wrong with my Jeep now?

Thanks!

You have 1 of three problems more than likely.
1= may be a leak in the filler neck hose and leaks during fill up but you said it goes away after turning the jeep off so skip to #2
2=may be leaking around the fuel sending unit seal on top of the tank but most likely you could smell that running or shut off if the tank was completely full so skip to #3
3= probably a leak in the main supply line at the sending unit and it leaks onto the top of the tank the whole time the jeep is running or even when the key is turned on and the pump runs it will leak. But before I dropped the tank I would check the rubber line were they hook into the steel lines around the area above your rear left shock.

Thanks for all of the replies! I am putting an OME lift on it hopefully within the next two weeks... as soon as the weather during the weekend will cooperate here in STL! I'll check everything over then.

I don't understand why the smell would go away though. It seems like if it were a leak, it would be consistent, and I guess it is except the smell goes away after 100 miles or so on the fresh tank.

I was understanding before the smell lasted until you shut the jeep off but now I understand that it smells only after filling the tank and goes away after the first 100 miles weather jeep is running or not it goes away???If that is the case it is most likely a leak in the top of the tank or around the sending unit seal or it is leaking onto the top of the tank from the filler tube.

Yes it is! I think we're at 6" of snow right now today and we still have 7 hours before it's supposed to be over. We're actually only a mile from that mall... pretty funny!

On the OME lift, I just got the bracket, but will be doing adjustable bars at some point. I'm going through the police academy right now, so we're broke. Back in Texas, they paid for the academy, but here you have to pay to go to the academy yourself, so I'm out of a job for 6 months. As soon as I graduate the TJ will get a lot more toys! :D

When I lifted the truck this weekend, the only thing that I saw that was weird was the tailpipe had a long cut in it. That would possibly cause an exhaust smell, but I didn't see anything leaking that would cause the raw gas smell.
