I have followed the Dakar Rally for many years. And I have never seen a Jeep entered?????? Why not???

They have Mini Coopers??? Can't the Jeeps handle it?

A new Wrangler is mechanically just about as reliable as any other vehicle on the road. I have yet to see a JK Wrangler abandoned by the side of the interstate fwiw. Now older Ford Windstars on the other hand.... ;) I am pretty sure a JK could do Dakkar just fine. I think most of the entrants tend to be foreign though. Jeep is not big in Africa like Land Rover. Personally I think a LR is MUCH less reliable than any Jeep product.

There are three Jeeps (at least that I know of) entered this year. One Grand Cherokee and two Wranglers.

The fifth edition of Dakar is on the South American continent, the Dakar will be hosted by three countries that have unveiled their characteristics over the last few years. The route will be hitting the high notes and hitting hard from the 5th to the 20th January, 2014. For the first time, the desert stages will make their appearance in the first few days of the rally. After reacquainting with Lima, the riders and drivers will get straight to the heart of the matter. The rest day that will take place in San Miguel de Tucuman will be more than welcome for the competitors, because, to reach Santiago, they will have to go the distance: more than 8,000 kilometres.

Did you know?

In 1997 Jeep considered making the Dakar edition which was based on a 4 door TJ?

The Dakar basically ended up becoming the Liberty 4 years later.
