How do I identify what lift kit I have?

I'm new to Jeep ownership, as I have just purchased my first Wrangler. I'm still trying to identify all the mods the previous owner made to my beloved 2015 JKU Rubicon, which I have dubbed Tin Man. So far I have identified the bumpers as Smittybuilt XRC Gen 2s, the wheels as Pro Comp 17" wrapped in Mickey Thompson Baja Boss LT315/70/R17 (35" x 12.5"), Tyger Steps and Tail Light covers. I think the carrier is from Rough country, and I'm not sure where the flat fender flares and inner fenders came from as well as where my LED Headlights (with RGB halos) my grill (which I think is called a shark grill). But my biggest mystery is my lift kit. All I know about it is that it's a 4inch lift and that it has Fox shocks.

Pay attention to your sway bar links if you still have and use the Rubicon e-disconnect; the links may be a little short if you have enough droop in your suspension. If the links aren't long enough they can flip when drooped and break/bend and cause steering issues.

I did finally get a chance to drive my Jeep today and the difference in the handling after the upgrades is night and day. They did put the leveling kit back on the Jeep, I didn't notice, good eye @Pressurized. The steering is tight and controlled and my steering wheel was straight. I had no idea how bad my steering was until I drove to Sonic for supper this evening.

Yeah, it's up to you if you want to keep them. They aren't doing anything positive for you performance wise.

But great to hear that it's better. I think it would be even better brought down to the 4" lift height. ;)

Cheers!

This is an old but fantastic discussion and I could really use the lift identification skills of @Pressurized

I just bought my second Jeep and its got a bunch of mods. I don't have a clue what kind of lift I have. Would love to send pics and hear some advice on the good bad and ugly and what I might need to get replaced.

Sure, I'll gladly take a look and see if I can ID what you have. Post up the pics, from the front of the axle, including the track bar, from the side, the springs, shocks and control arms and also the same from the rear. Got a few of us with the ability to ID the stuff pretty well. How does it drive? Do you have any specific concerns?

Also, this measurement is useful if you can get it for us. Compare to the 9-3/8"...

Definitely a ProComp 4" lift. Could tell from the first photo of the front spring with the "tight" coils. Confirmed with the rear track bar mount. So, I'm not a big fan of those. The cam bolts used all around the lift are generally low end. I also see you have Pro Comp twin tube front shocks and Rubicon Express monotube rear shocks. That's not a great combination. I'd update with a matching set.

How much rock crawling do you do? I ask, because some guys don't want control arm brackets because they are concerned about max ground clearance... If I was looking at that, I would put a cam bolt eliminator kit in the front axle and add a set of Rancho Geometry Correction Brackets. The geometry brackets correct a variety of geometry changes that occur when we lift our vehicles.

Then a set of matching shocks... I would use Rocksports.

Is the front a little high? It looks like the rear is lower than it should be with that much lift...

Here's some links with lowest cost I know of, for the items I would do first to make that Jeep drive the way I wanted it to.

Thank you so much for the great info and recommendations! I don't think i’ll get into much rock crawling so I think I'll visit a local off-road shop and see about getting these parts installed. The mismatched shocks definitely bothered me so I appreciate the product recommendation.

I noticed the front was a little higher, too. Do you think it’s the rear shocks or something else causing that? Would the new shocks fix that?

@Pressurized Would the small spacers to make up the sag in the rear make the ride more rough or would it be negligible? I just know that 99 had spacers that made that thing as stiff as it could've been.

I didn't notice any difference in ride on mine when I used the spacers to fine tune my ride height. I think the difference in 1" spacers and something like 2.5" spacers used for a lift would be noticeable. And on a 99, with short control arms when you lift, you increase the control arm angle a lot and that causes the road imperfections to transfer to the chassis a LOT more than a JK with mid length arms. The geometry on a JK is a lot better than a TJ.

Lmfao dude that was AWESOME! I thought I was gonna get ripped apart like the OP LOL I was “told” it had a 2.5 in lift but I’m looking at other lifts and I’m sitting here like ummmmm Wtf lol I’ll be diving into your recommendations today. I have hit two trails from the badge of honor list in Texas. Your right I bounced around like a damn bobble head. I will say it rides really well on road but it does hit hard when I go over stuff. And yes agreed. From what I know of RC they are Amazon owned jk. Sir keep up the good work!

@Pressurized I've got another one for you if you can. I bought a '20 Rubicon Unlimited for my wife recently. Took it back to the dealership because of death wobble and they stated it had an aftermarket lift on it and wanted $1K to fix it or a little over $4K to replace the lift with a Jeep lift. I'm trying to figure out what it has and what needs to be done. One of the items they mentioned needing correction was caster correction. I was looking at the AEV 2.5" lift you mentioned above, but really unsure what this vehicle needs. Any help would be much appreciated! Thank you in advance, Sir!
