Howell Fuel Injection Check Engine Light

I have a Howell Fuel Injection on my 1987 I6 Wrangler and live in California.

This year (but not in previous years), the smog technician would not even start the test because he said the Check Engine light is supposed to come on when you move the key to the "On" position (prior to starting the engine).

I don't think this system has ever done that but also don't know if it should. I know the light works as it makes a quick flash right after turning off the engine.

I have been looking for documentation on this for the last week and haven't found a definitive answer.

Does anyone know if it is supposed to turn on like this?
If it is supposed to, any idea why mine doesn't turn on?
If it isn't, can anyone help me find the documentation to support it?

Welcome to the Forum @lrollins

AFIK, 1987-1990 YJs with a 6 cylinder engine never had a CEL.
However, since the Howell FI setup is CARB approved (CARB is the emission authority in California) , the CEL in your Jeep may be part of the Howell setup. I'd contact Howell for confirmation and advice.

My 1987 six cylinder didn't/doesn't flash a CEL at any time. I don't know where to locate any information on this. I don't know if a dealer can give you any documentation or if you have to go to an emission referee (or whatever that position is called in your state).

Good Luck, L.M.

Welcome to the forum!

Somebody on here recently installed a Howell for California and was having a different no start issue, but I seem to recall him saying they included a Check Engine Light for him to wire in. Maybe a phone call to Howell on Monday will get you straightened out.

I apologize for any confusion...

I do have a Check Engine Light that is wired into the Howell electronics and it does light up. I have seen it once or twice over the last year or two and just had to turn the engine off/on to clear it. It also flashes a few times when the engine is shut off.

The smog tech said that it is normal to see it flash when the engine is turned off but it should also light up when you turn the ignition to "on" and remain lit until the engine starts. I was hoping to hear from someone with a Howell FI in a YJ to confirm this happens or not.

Thank you to everyone who has responded!

From what I understand, Howell has good customer support. I'd contact their customer support hotline and ask.
Does the Howell setup have a diagnostic port? If so, do you have a code reader.

Good Luck, L.M.
