Hi guys. Being super new to the Jeep world, I'm learning a ton here on Wrangler Forums. One of the questions I had is regarding tire pressure in these big tires. I have 315's on 17 inch rims. The sidewall lists max load at a max PSI of 50. I'm wondering what people are running for an everyday street pressure. Mine are currently at around 45 and I have no idea if that's correct or not, as I've only had my JK for a few days now.

Thanks!

That sounds way too high. Try the chalk test.. Get a piece of sidwalk chalk and draw a nice thick line straight across the tread of your tire. Drive straight about 100 feet. Stop and check the line. You'll notice the center worn off more than the edges. Lower the air and repeat until it wears evenly. That will be your new psi.

I used to run 32-35 PSI on mine except on trips I would raise it to 40 PSI for slightly less rolling resistance.

The chalk test is good for maximizing traction and tire tread wear but it does not measure load capacity or sidewall flex. If you use this test stay in the mid to high range.

Also keep in mind lowering your pressure may trigger your TPMS sensors if you have them, so you will need to reset the threshold.

Thanks guys. Mine is a 4 door. I'll definitely be letting some air out of these things. They were hitting between 44 and 46 PSI and it was in the mid-30's outside. I'll bet if I left 'em alone until summer, they'd exceed 50 PSI in the heat.

I think I'll drop 'em to 30 PSI cold and see how that feels.

Thanks again.

I just got a set on my four door and when they were balanced and mounted, they had it all the way up to like 38 and I felt every single bump in the road. I dropped him to 32 and it seems absolutely perfect. I got a couple hundred miles now on them and no sign of excessive wear either. When I off-road, I drop them down to 25 as long as I’m not on pavement.

Chalk test x 100

No two tires will read the same. Weight, 2 door/4 door. Load range, etc

A 35 I've seen people run 24 to 28. The chalk test is the best for optimal psi

Im driving on 35x16 load e Hankooks. Light weight 2 door and the chalk test shows 23 (full tread contact) I run 25/24 cold.

I run 315/75/16 MTZ's too. Typically I run the following pressures depending on the conditions...30# for better mileage and on dry roads, heavy snow conditions I'll go down to 20-26#, packed snow/ice 15-22#.
Off-road 10# now that I'm running Beadlocks 5-8#. This is an excellent tire that hooks up on everything, flexes great, bombproof sidewall and great road manners!
