I'm looking to add an Odyssey battery to my Jeep and was wondering if this is the correct Odyssey battery that folks are using?

Odyssey 34/78

>Amazon link here<

If so, this isn't an awful price. I have heard that these are basically the same battery as the sears diehard platinum which are a little cheaper. However, the DHP was $229.00 when I went to sears tonight so it's not that much cheaper.

I'm really just trying to figure out the size that will fit in my 2013 JKUR.

Hey Tyler..

I can't remember if the name was Odyssey or Optima, but I remember reading that some 'O' battery had switched its production to Mexico and their quality went through the floor. NFR2000 (Race Car Dave) had some really in depth comments about the whole deal. Maybe if no one answers you here, you might try sending him a PM. He had a ton of information.

He said he had switched to the Sears, because they were still built and warrantied here in the US.

Sorry I can't answer your specific question! Good luck! :)

Optima went south.

Hi

I installed the ODYSSEY Extreme Series Battery PC1220

I did not now that the pc1500 fits, have any done it?

The cables are very short, need to have the poles on the right side.

Here is my battery, just put it in. There is a writeup, can not link, google ODYSSEY Extreme Series Battery PC1220 for 2012-Up Jeep JK Wranglers

Hi

I dont think that the 1500 will fit because it has the poles reversed, the cabels are very short.

Have any one done it, please tell.

According to Odyssey they recommend the same battery that I have, 1220

ODYSSEY Batteries - Find a Battery

There are another writeup for sears Diehard Platinum p-5 group 35. Google

"Diehard platinum Battery for a 2012-up Jeep jk Wrangler"

Some say DieHard Platinum PM1 fits

I am pretty sure the 1500 fits. There are several threads and write ups about this battery in a JEEP (most are in other forums). The 1220 does not have the CCA's that I need for my winch so I have to get a bigger battery with more cranking amps. Also, it is my understanding that the Diehard Platinum battery that has the same CCA's (and works in a Jeep) is the P-4.

My experience with the 1500.

My 2013 JK

It is short, you will be "fighting" it. I was able to get the negative side to clamp but not the positive side and I didn't have time to deal with it, so the stock went back in.

Sears Platinum and Oddssey same batteries different badges!

That used to be the case but the Sears Plats are made by another company now (Deka). They are still supposed to be a high quality battery though.

Odyssey batteries are awesome, I had one that had 8 years on it when I sold it with the third car it was in. The DieHard Platinums are the same battery rebranded and come with a nice warranty, if you have the time to wait they are usually on sale every few months or so and the sale price is under $200.

Also factor in the cost of a new charger, these batteries don't like the typical charger cycles/voltage- the Odyssey charger is the way to go.

I bought a Diehard two weeks ago and they discontinued their proration warranty terms. They will replace it free if the battery goes dead before the 3 year term..

After 3 years, you're SOL - now you pay full price for a new battery.

The 34r-pc1500 fit with ease and the install was a breeze. 15 minute total install. Here are a few pictures of the battery installed with the reversed terminals from that of the normal 1500.
UgaTyler,

I installed this battery on my jeep today. No problem. However, I noticed that the footprint is slightly smaller that the stock battery. It seems to be well secured. Did you do any mods to better secure the battery?

Would someone be please be so kind to confirm that the following Amazon offer of a 34 R PC 1500 is correct for a 2014 JKU even though the product picture shows the terminal post alignment of the non R model?

Amazon.com: Odyssey Batteries 34R-PC1500T-A Automotive/Light Truck and Van Battery: Automotive

I think others may have had similar confusion (considering the questions) but I want to be absolutely certain before I purchase such an expensive non returnable item.
Added a point of clarification to my post above.

Thanks for the info guys, OE battery toast so I'll pick up the 34R-PC1500 from Summit Racing on the way home......seems that Sears has problems getting the Group 34 and 35 Platinum batteries in, none in the metro ATL area had any in stock and website wasn't shipping (none in warehouse). Odyssey was just a little more so......no worries :D

Can confirm, the 34R-PC1500T is a quick swap out. On my '13 JKU Sport it was a direct swap out. I initially got an Optima and was disappointed to see it was going to be a 'job' to make it work. I took it back to 4WheelParts and got the Odyssey.

It would really depend on the company you buy the battery from and how long it sat on a shelf. All the car battery companies I know of charge their batteries completely before leaving the factory.

Just installed the Odyssey 34r PC1500 battery. Fits perfectly - 10 minute job as noted above. Picked it up at 4WheelParts in Thousand Oaks (socal) for $218 plus tax. They had it in stock. Started right up with no charging needed.

Anyone in NJ area want this battery for $229? Brand new in box!

I have a 2005 TJ and bought the WRONG battery for my TJ. I ordered the 34R-PC1500T by mistake and the terminals are reversed. It won't connect up! I can ship it back but it would be easier to just sell it. I got it for $229 and that's all I want for it. Come to my house in NJ and pick it up! It's new, just go here today and in the box.

my email is goingfaster2001@ yahoo.com.

I have the 34R-PC1500 battery installed in my 12' JK as well. Works great.
Just be aware that the JK alternator or your standard battery charger will NOT charge this battery properly, only to 97% of its capacity. You need the proper charger. I use the CTEK MUS4.3 as my battery maintenance charger. It is an 8 step Smart charger. It provides the proper 14.7vdc bulk charge voltage then kicks back to 13.7vdc float, then to pulse after 7days so it does not cook the electrolyte out with a continuous trickle. I install it whenever I am not driving it.
Also be aware that if you discharge this battery to 50% or less you WILL need a charger that can provide a MINIMUM of 25 amps bulk charging current for this particular ah capacity battery at 14.7vdc for proper Deep Discharge Recovery.
The battery charge capacity will degrade quicker over time if it is not maintained as Enersys recommends.
Odyssey will not honor the warranty if these conditions are not met.
Here is the information regarding the Odyssey battery charging requirements.
http://www.odysseybattery.com/documents/us-ody-tm-001_0411_000.pdf

If I did not need a redundant deep cycle battery backup for my Overland Exploration solar power setup, I WOULD NOT have purchased this battery for my JK starter battery. I also purchased the Morningstar PS-30M solar controller. Since it seems to be able to charge the Odyssey battery at the proper voltages. It has 3 selectable charge patterns. AGM/SLA/Flood. The Morningstar PS-30M is kind of a solar CTEK Smart charger.
Food for thought.

Correction on my statement saying the JK alternator will not charge the Odyssey battery fully. It will if you drive it far enough to replenish the current used to start it. Since the standard auto alternator puts out on average 14.2vdc and the Odyssey requires 14.7vdc, it will take a longer drive than the usual "standard" battery would need to replenish the start current used.
So no short beer runs while blasting your 1000watt stereo, if you want this battery to last.
Hence the need for a CTEK battery maintainer to guarantee you get it to the proper full charge for longest life.

But the required .4C needed for Deep Discharge Recovery(discharged to 50%or less) is still REQUIRED though. Sucks that you have to buy a $200 charger just to Deep Discharge Recover this $220 battery.

If I do discharge it to 50% or less, I hope my Schumacher 14.4v/25 amp charger can Bulk charge it to get it to Absorption voltage. Where I can than connect my CTEK MUS4.3 to continue the start of the Absorption charge at 4.3 amps and 14.7vdc to finish it to full charge. I am hoping I'm correct on that assumption.

34R-1500 is a 64ah battery.
So .4 x 64ah= 25.6 amps Bulk charge current. As Odyssey recommends 25 amps.

Should have researched this a little better, before I purchased the Odyssey. But I wanted a Starter/Deep Cycle battery as a redundant solar power generator backup to my Yeti400(with 33ah chain battery) solar power generator.

Just pretend that your Jeep is a boat. In many ways it is very similar, although potentially less money outlay in the long run.
