Oil Cooler Assembly / Coolant Leak Question

Hi folks! Been a 12-JKU owner for sometime now, and a long time lurker on this forum. I'm afraid I'm having to troubleshoot a coolant leak and wanted to tap into some experience here for some help.

So: I've ruled out leaks from any of the hoses / pump, etc... and am thinking the leak is most likely from the oil filter/cooler assembly. However, I as I was laying in bed last night I was wondering whether if it was in fact this part, it could still leak while the vehicle is parked and not running. Even though the Jeep has been parked for several weeks, it still has the drip-drip leak of coolant... Can this happen if the engine is not running & therefore no pressure in the system? OR, does that indicate leak is somewhere else and not the oil cooler assembly?

For reference, it's a 2012 JKU Rubicon with approx. 80K miles.

Cheers!!

Have you pulled the fan shroud and looked that the back of the radiator?

The leak is not from anywhere near the radiator. The drip to the floor comes from around the oil pan access ports, however that is no indication on where the origination is... but it's certainly somewhere around the engine block

The oil filter/cooler leaks oil, not coolant. The 2 most common coolant leaks are from where the driver side end cap is crimped onto the radiator as Terry asks above and from the housing for the thermostat where the hose goes into the top of the engine.
I thought cooler gets to the oil cooler as well, and in the event of a crack coolant can leak from there... Ruled out leark from thermostat as well.. I've used a dye to try and locate the leak but have not seen anything around those locations.

Welcome to the Forum, from Cave Creek AZ.

Yes it is possible to have a leak when cold, and not hot because of expansion. Try pressure testing it when it is cold.

Ok, folks... coming back to close the loop on this one. I believe I've resolved the issue... Sure enough the valley below the filter assembly was a flooded with coolant (see pic). Cleaning everything up and put in the new assembly and things appear to be ok so far. One of the screws holding the assembly to the block refused to tighten (one in the rear), and I was like whatever... hopefully the other 4 would do the job.

Not a tough job, but just takes time with minimal specialized tools. Oh, and I replaced the plugs while at it as well...

I thought I'd piggy back on this thread rather than start a new one since I have a similar issue and suspect the oil cooler is leaking coolant. Have a 2013 JKU. Losing a small amount of coolant and get a faint sweet smell of evaporating anti-freeze when around the engine bay or even walking by it after driving. So far I have not found visual evidence of a leak in another location. No drips or puddling that I've been able to find. Looking down into gap by the oil filter housing with a flashlight reveals what looks like some liquid down on top of the block. So, I'm really suspicious of the oil cooler housing leaking the coolant but one never knows until you get deep into that area buried in no-man's land of the engine (replaced oil pressure switch about a year ago). A few questions for those that have done this repair:

1. I replaced the gaskets for the lower and upper intake manifolds about 10 months ago when I replaced the oil pressure switch that's in this exact area. About 2,500 miles driven since then (it's not driven much these days). Do I need to replace the lower and upper intake gaskets again when I make this repair, or are the ones I put in there 10 months ago likely fine?

2. Should I drain all the coolant, or just enough to get the level below the height of the oil cooler to avoid any coolant leaking out into this area when removed?

3. Drain and replace the engine oil after the oil cooler has been replaced?

EDIT: Also, looking for a good source/price for the oil cooler part (Mopar #5184294AE).

Thanks in advance for you insights.

1 i always replace gaskets after i have run them .(is it worth doing again again because you didn't?)

2 i didn't drain the coolent when i did mine ,i just crimped the rear soft hose with hose clamp pliers ,
i lost about a 1/2 cup of fluid total.

3 if you don't flood coolant into any oil passages ,it should be fine.

i had a mechanic friend source and order mine for me ,
i was more concerned it was the latest version and genuine mopar then price

Mine has always had that sweet smell and a slow use of coolant. No leaks and runs fine. Took a close look at the valley and didn't see anything. But, wow there is nothing but plastic on that engine. I hope I never have to work on it. Still have the original everything on it. A well timed series of failures could put me out of it. This JK is garaged and never sees temp extremes so I hope that helps. Always use 5-20 oil. Everything being built now days can have problems.
