Old School KC Lites Daylighters

Today I scored a good deal on six old school Daylighters. I believe they are 150 watt incandescent. They came with 2 Wagner 4049 (150 W spot/flood combo) replacement bulb reflectors. Does anyone have experience with these lights. I plan to give them a try but I will likely upgrade to halogen or hid. TIA

Those things take a LOT of juice to run. You're looking at about 75 amps to power them. You might need to upgrade your charging system.

I had only two on my '87 YJ, and if they were on for any length of time, my volt meter would know it.

Power(watts)=voltage x current
Current=power/voltage
Current=(150w+150w)/14v(when running)
Only about 21amps

You can run them on 10ga wire through a dedicated relay

I ran a pair on my old silverado. Awesome lights. Ran thru a relay and had some inline fuses as well to a toggle inside. I only used them when I was the only one on the highway or backroads/field. Be aware though--I think they discontinued them years ago so replacement bulbs will be incredibly hard to find (the 150 W anyway). The 130s are plentiful.

I love old school KC daylighters. Put a set on my daughters Jeep and she made me transfer them over when she got the new one (I doubt she has ever turned them on).
My son has 4 PIAA halogens which are also nice. Never seen a need to run even 4 for any amount of time. A single pair puts out plenty of light but I like the idea of mounting six for "just in case" and because lights look cool...

I'm pretty sure that wattage goes UP as voltage is increased to a given bulb anyhow... I mean they do get brighter....

Thanks for the input. I am an electrician so I understand the current requirements and wiring needs. I only plan to use 4 of them, 2 centered on my bumper and 2 on the A-pillars. I also have a 50" bar, so yes. it should be plenty of light. I do not anticipate running all of them at once. I am in contact with KC and I am considering retrofitting them to newer HID or halogen replacements.. I want to try them like they are first though.

I have a couple of old KC 150-watt Daylighters on the front bumper of my TJ. I only use them to spot things way out there, off road of course; usually when looking for a good hunting spot pre-dawn.

I installed them with a relay under the hood and a button switch on the dash designed for horns. I never need them on for long, so the button switch works for me.

When I burn out one of the bulbs or get a rock in the wrong place, I'll start looking for replacement bulbs or whatever makes sense. These old-technology units were made tough as nails and should last the life of the Jeep.

C2DJ, let us know what you wind up doing with yours. I'm interested in new ideas for keeping these lamps lighting the way forever.

The main purpose for mine is also when I want to see something waaaay out there as well. KC got back with me and the LED replacements will work as well as the halogen bulb and reflector. So the conclusion is that the can be retrofitted to LED for $200/pair as opposed to $400 per pair or halogen for $75 per pair as opposed to $200 per pair. I installed 2 last night on the center of my bumper and I can see all the way down my street, CLEARLY. I am going to test them at the ranch tomorrow night. :happyyes:
I will probably upgrade the lights on my A-pillar to the LED conversions, for work lights.
