Hey Everyone.. Need some advise before I start buy random stuff for my Jeep.

I've got a 2003 TJ Sahara, 4.0, automatic, 180k on body. Just installed new 4.0 with a 110K on it.

After driving it for a couple days code P1281 popped up.

Replaced Thermostat with one from O'reillys. I asked for a 195.. My receipt shows 195.. However I never checked it prior to installing it.

Cleared the code.. Came back a few days later.

Cleared it again.. Came back again.

Problem 1.. The code p1281
Problem 2.. Heat is luke warm at best.
Problem 3.. Gauge never goes above 160 - 170

I've had other wranglers and the gauge hovers around 190 - 210. Plus the heat is like a furnace.

Anyone have any ideas??

Go get another thermostat... stant or mopar 195...
NOT a failsafe...
You either have the wrong one or it is defective.

I did same thing on 05 tj Rubicon U. 4.0. I thought the engine was running to high temp. I decided that based on not being able to touch anything under the hood from the heat. Read a blog later about better gas mileage. I didn't verify but it said 210 is operating temp anything lower can cause computer to make fuel adjustments to bring up temp. I remembered that before it did stay on 210 all the time. I took the 185 out and put the 210 back in. Could be related. But I'm a newbie here reader beware. Peace

Did you get it fixed? One other thought...If you are even a little low on coolant the temp sensor wont read correctly since it is located in one of the highest points in the system, meaning it wont be submerged in coolant so it cant read the temperature. And if the system is low enough--about 1/2 full it wont circulate coolant through the heater core.

Get an ir heat gun and verify that actual temp mirrors gauge temp

I'm having the same problem on my 03 and just ordered a new 195 Stant thermostat. I just noticed the problem when it gets below freezing outside and then it will throw that code. The first time it was low on coolant because of a loose lower hose but this time not so sure.

Last winter I didn't get the code but had to keep heat on high but wouldn't keep me warm on defrost. My last tj would cook you so I knew something was wrong. I flushed the heater core and it seems better now but not sure if it's 100% yet.

I'm getting it on my '05 2.4L whenever I jump in and drive off without letting it warm up a bit when the temps get around freezing. 2nd t-stat, heats fine, no leaks, etc. I'm getting used to using my Torque App to clear it. :)

Maybe a 'slow' temp sensor at the gooseneck, may be dirty connections at said sensor, but where you say the heat is weak that would lean more toward 'low' water flow. Low due to air, restriction, down on fluid, that sort of thing.
